Good discussion you should watch to get an idea on what’s happening. If there’s anything that I find really disturbing, it is the insistence of the two featured Northerners on applying Sharia law. They don’t even seem to have a clue about what democracy really means.
Democracy isn’t just “the rule of the majority.” It is the rule of the majority without infringing on the rights of the minority. One of these rights is religious freedom.
Lovely.
Gosh, makes me so hopeful about this country’s future.
These guys ought to read Abdullahi An-Na’im’s book Islam and the Secular State: Negotiating the Future of Sharia.

You talk as if democracy is a perfect system, it’s not. Therefore it makes sense (if you are really a Muslim) to believe in God’s laws, why would he send them down in the first place if He knew it was going to be redundant and before you say God meant for those laws to be for the Prophet’s time and therefore are not applicable to today’s world then why the heck would he fill up half the Qur’an with Shariah? He could have just ask the Prophet to compile them in some constitution text or something and not in our Holy Book that is meant to stay unaltered and therefore to be followed at all times.
Why do people always like to pick and choose? Life is not a chocolate factory people.
And btw, I’m Sudanese and I seriously doubt that both the NCP or the Ummah party know what Shari’ah really means. Shari’ah will never be applied in the right manner unless we have the right SYSTEM of government and not a confused oligarchy.
Why dont you answer you fraidy cat?
Nobody thinks that democracy is really the perfect system. It is just the best mechanism to keep an imperfect system in check.
It’s a ball rolling around the box, not a mechanism to keep a box from falling over the table.
