The Ultimate In Reason Vs Faith Smackdowns

by Drima on December 29, 2009

This. Is. Orgasmic. Some of my favorite religious and atheist thinkers - including Sam Harris and Dinesh D’Souza - are in it, and the format is really cool.

You also have people somewhere in the middle, like Robert Wright, who are neither religious nor really atheist.

If you’re into this kind of stuff, I recommend you watch it. And this too.

Just watched, and honestly nothing too great. The problem with it is that due to a huge audience I felt like each person the atheist side was trying to dumb down and oversimplify, while each on the religion side (with the exception of the exceptional D’Souza) was trying to preach and go ad hominem. Too typical of a faith vs. science dialog, and the timing was EXTREMELY restricting for every one of them.
I also think Robert Wright was extremely convincing, but still the time restrictions pretty much limited everyone unfairly.

Overall, a very average dialog. I was hoping for a more direct approach, perhaps in a smaller setting.

Hey Quali, ah, guess we’ll have to disagree.

I found it great because it’s very rare that you find so many of these guys all in one place debating each other. Sure, it lacked depth, but for that, there are tons of YouTube videos featuring some of the people featured in smaller settings. This one is unique.

I watched this a while back and also found it quite impressive if only because of the large variety of opinions they got to pack into a single space. Unfortunately, most of the jokes each speaker told were lost on the audience.

But I agree with Quali - not very much new came out of it.

Having said that, I will jump at almost any opportunity to listen to or watch Dan Dennett (and I really should read some of his stuff too)
