RIP King of Pop

by Drima on June 28, 2009

You’re probably tired of seeing the news everywhere, but he deserves to be remembered. He certainly will always be remembered and immortalized by the amazing music he created.

All my life, I’ve always found it weird to see fans crying when their favorite celebrity dies. Now, I didn’t cry when I heard the news, but I was pretty saddened.

In a lot of ways Michael Jackson was my childhood. His music filled it with lots of joy and beautiful memories. It uplifted me when I was down. It made me happy when I was sad.

And as awkward and flawed as he was, I will dearly miss him and his talents.

RIP Michael. :(

For the past few days all I can remember when I think about Michael Jackson is sitting in the Dokan in the village of al Widay (northern state, Sudan) getting to know the people and being asked “Is there any American who is more famous than Michael Jackson?”

I was at a loss and we decided that no, there isn’t.

I was not sad for him when he passed. I hope he is at peace now as I was not sure he was at peace when he was alive. His death evoked memories for me. It is those memories that I am nostalgic towards. I am mourning my own past.

Precisely, ArabAmerican. That’s a big part of the deal for me as well. Lots of great memories associated with his music.

Tom, when were you in Sudan?

Drima,

I worked near Karima twice, for two months each time.

January - March of 2007 and 2008. I was sad that I wasn’t able to go this year, but the new dam was complete and Amri was flooded, so the project was finished. With luck, we’ll head back soon for something new. I miss my friends there.

Drima…

I found myself saddened…but for a different reason:

I guess I look at the macro…not the micro…human suffering. A guy who should have had an utterly amazing life…yet was tormented by others and himself, along with all the “perks” and worship and all that.

His death makes me think about what I have been thinking about for 40 years now and have pretty much come up empty…why are we here? Why are things as they are? Why is life so full of pain, cruelty, sickness? For the more analytical among us…there is little rest…even if you are happy…how can you close you eyes to the pain all around you?

Many have talked of it…I am reminded of Khohelet..I think it is Lamentations in the Old Testament…Truly an amazing piece given how long ago it was written. Maybe King Solomon was the first recorded Michael Jackson…having everything…yet having a life with a WHOLE lot of madness.

So…it is a sad period for me. Not so much for Michael…but for all that he symbolizes for me…all the could have beens, all the how did this happens, all the how is the world as it is…everybody’s misguided choices, bad breaks, all the being in the wrong place at the wrong time… all the loss and all the misses…all the “so what’s this all mean?”

Truly a sad day.

Another twist…

I think by Biblical Law…Jackson’s kids are Jewish…

Hmmm…

RIP King Of Pop.

Frankly, as an adult, I like Mike when he was still black.

“Ch’mon, to tha post office! Don’t stop ’till you get enough!”

I don’t know what he’s saying, but, damn them some phat beats.

Peace,
-Doctor Gill
