Oh. My. God.
Okay, so you’ve probably already heard about the amazing Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent. You know, the 47 year old, unmarried woman, who’s never been kissed, is unemployed and lives with her cat?
Makes you kinda grateful for those seemingly lame high school crushes now huh?
But yeah, anyways, this kid Shaheen Jafargholi… well, he’s mind-blowing. I mean, damn, where the hell was he hiding all this time? Stellar. And absolutely mind-blowing.
That’s some serious crazy talent for a 12 year old, heck, for any aspiring singer.

he’s so adorable!! and his accent is so sweet!
I know it’s not really the best place for this question, Drima, but I’ve been reading about Al-Tayyib Salih lately (helped a friend of mine do a literary essay on one of his books, in fact) and I was wondering if you have an opinion on him and his works. I’m thinking of picking up a few of them to read.
I’m also a bit uncertain as to which translation to go with - English ones are available, and look good. I also have direct Arabic-to-Hebrew translations from local Andalus Publishing, which look professionally translated even if the publisher *is* a former (Jewish) spokeswoman for Azmi Bishara… in fact, I’m less concerned by her stupid politics and more by her insistence that the translators all turn the Arabic works into what is basically High Hebrew, or what was seen as High Hebrew several decades ago… basically writing them in a form and language that intellectual elites would appreciate.
So… simple, straightforward but still very accurate English translations, or the (possibly) more authentic yet also possibly unreadable Hebrew translations.
Hi Roman,
to be honest I haven’t delved that greatly into all of Salih’s stuff, and regarding my opinions on his works, well… I can write pages about them. But ultimately, I like the guy’s genius of articulating complex relationships educated Northern Sudanese of his generation went through, and I’d recommend you first read his acclaimed Season of Migration to the North in a simple straightforward English translation.
This looks good…

Righto, I’ll do just that.
