Go Spain!

The finals, are finally here people! It’s too bad and sad the Netherlands is already out (ops, I’m “supposed” to hate them and boycott them right?). It’s nice that Italy got eliminated however. I’m super glad. They already had their moment in the last World Cup. They should be satisfied with that. :P

I really wanted to Turkey to reach the finals and win. Imagine, Turkey the EU wanna-be winning the Euro Cup. Now that would have been hilarious. Hard-core Europeans would have probably gotten so pissed off.

Speaking of Turkey, I was talking to my friend in Berlin last night and I asked her who the Turks living in Germany (and who are mostly German citizens) were supporting during the Germany Vs Turkey match.

To my slight surprise, she said they were all pretty much openly supporting Turkey.

“Hard-core Europeans would have probably gotten so pissed off.”

Um, no. I have been watching the match vs. Germany together with about 5000 people. Mostly German, of course, but I sat right in the middle between two rows of Turkish fans.

And I can say: It was, despite I expected something else, really really peaceful. And there were so many people who clapped after the opponents national anthem, so many cars with double flags, German and Turkish…

Yeah, many German-born German nationals of Turkish descent support the Turkish team. Interestingly, there is not German national player of Turkish descent, but some two or three players of the Turkish squad born in Germany. Maybe that really has to do with this so much talked about integration problem.

But after all the Euro Cup is really a big party for all of us. When walking home from the game, a Turkish boy came up to me and congratulated me to the German win. I wouldn’t have expected that, but probably the situation is better than especially the Germans often like to think. We are, after all, not much of self-confident people.

I cannot think of any turk i know here in Denmark who wouldnt support Turkey over Denmark in football.

The whole city here were turned into a little Istanbul when Turkey defeated Croatia by the way.

The Turkish fans in Germany actually celebrated Germany’s win with the German fans after the match. During the match each supported their own. Now the German Turks support Germany.

I am for Turkey’s (and also Morocco’s) membership in the EU, btw.

I always loose interest in the World Cup and the European Championships when they get to the latter stages. How many times haven’t I hoped for a change of patterns, and how many times been dissapointed. The fun and colorful teams allways loose out in the quarter finals and we are left with the predictable ones. like Italy, Brazil, Germany and Argentine. And how often do we have to wave goodbye to the teams that give soccer anything, like Ghana in the World Cup and Turkey this time around.
Contradictory to other football lovers, the fun part of the big tournaments are in the starting stages.

Well i must admit that i supported Germany, our neightbors to the south. But fair, they didnt play good enough… Only Bastian Schweinsteiger had an acceptable performance. Too bad my german friends!! Better luck to the World Cup

I see Spain won. I’m a little confused why Spain always does so good in these UEFA Championships but then flops so bad when it comes to the World Cup. Spain is currently the #4 ranked team, but they barely qualified for the last World Cup. I hope they maintain their success. I don’t know anywhere that has such a strong football culture as Spain that hasn’t won at least one World Cup trophy.

After watching the Spain vs. Russia game I figured Spain not winning would be kind of like the last Superbowl. Anyway, at least this time it worked out the way it was supposed to.

Spain actually have a reputation to perform very badly in every major competitions, including the World Cup. People are talking about a curse being broken.
