We knew this was coming for a while. Win or lose, Obama has achieved the seemingly unachievable, and I can bet you that the people who where in charge of his fund-raising, public relations, branding and marketing efforts are going to be very sought after. Watch his nomination victory speech here and see McCain’s response here.
This is all so exciting! It’s probably even better than watching the world cup. And like I said, I can’t wait for the one-on-one debates to begin.
So, who will win? Will it be the creative youthful Donkey who sometimes seems to be living in La La Land or the Elephant with the “dinosaur” experience who comes across once in a while as just another Bush?
The majority of the American people are in essence tired of what has transpired under the Elephant Bush administration and basically want something different. They want change. The winner will be the person who can represent that change well and right now I believe that person is Obama regardless of what those who oppose him think of him because it’s irrelevant. What’s relevant is how people, the majority of the American people perceive him and so far, he’s managed to build himself a very good brand.
Hello, let’s not forget that in 2006 during the midterm elections the Senate and House of Representatives went to the Donkeys. It was a shift towards the left. I don’t think the momentum has slowed down. In fact given the increasing oil prices, I believe the dissatisfaction has only grown. Plus, if you take into account how Obama managed to quickly recover from the Wright controversy, then you have another indication of that momentum’s strength.
We’ve still got many months to go and a lot can happen. Potential controversies and campaign management on both sides will of course also be two factors in the final outcome, but at the end of the day, by looking at the midterm election results and the current circumstances, I’d say America is in the mood for a Donkey president.
UPDATE: Have you guys watched the AIPAC speech? I did. The whole thing. Phew, what a speech! And the highlight? When he said “Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided.”
WTF?
Even the Israeli government doesn’t say stuff like that. Even they are cool with dividing Jerusalem into East for Palestine and West for Israel.
Not surprisingly, throughout Obama’s whole speech, that line got the loudest applause.
Overall though, the speech was clearly a middle finger meant to silence those on the right who have banged Obama and questioned him over his position on diplomacy with Iran. It was meant to eliminate doubts over his perceived weakness.
We’ve just seen and heard a very different Obama, and I’ve got to say that I’m so looking forward to what happens next. This is going to be one hell of an amusing election. Damn, I love American politics. The whole thing is just sooo entertaining.
Israelis and Jews lurking around, what do you think after that tough speech?

“Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided.” quite a sound bite: but is it really his decision to make ? I mean should the Jooz and Ayrabs wake up and see the light one day and decide to part the cake, would they have to ask his permission ? Just an infidel gentile wondering ….
I think it was just rhetoric. Pure and simple. The reality is different and Obama knows this. Something like that will never go down well with the already hostile neighborhood. That’s why it was a very bold statement to make. After all, it got him a lot of applause.
I have to admit it made me see Obama in a new light.
I can think of three possibilities.
1. He really is a supporter of Israel, but for the sake of supporting Israel and not for the sake of other policies or beliefs. (And he kept quiet about it until he got all the moon bat support he needed.)
2. He said it to get the Jewish (and some other Israel supporters’) vote. That would still be useful as it still sends a strong message, even if he won’t follow through with it. (I am all for compromise, but I am also for not compromising before we get anything for it.)
3. It was one of his typical gaffes. Maybe he didn’t even know why Jerusalem was a big issue; just as he didn’t seem to know that Auschwitz was a big enough issue for almost everyone to know where it is located and who liberated it.
But even in the third case, it’s a fantastic signal. If the loony makes fantastic statements, they could just as well be pro-Israel. Would be a nice change.
And there was I thinking that the internationally recognised capital of Israel was Tel Aviv…

It varies by countries, Rob. Officially, most UN members don’t recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital due to the original (absurd) plan of the UN being the international sovereign of the city, and the political pressure by Arab states later on.
In reality, Jerusalem is still the place where Israel’s parliament is located, where all major government institutes are located, and it still remains the most important city for Israelis.
The United States has been one of the few counties to consistently recognize Israel’s own chosen capital city. Others play games of Move of the Consulate as their international politics change, though most placed the embassies in the Tel-Aviv region.
Andrew, I think he kept quiet all this time to get the support of people beyond center-left. Now that he has the nomination, he doesn’t need that support anymore. That’s my guess.
As for my opinion on the speech, Drima… In all truth, it makes me wonder just how much of Obama there is out there and how much is various advisers.
I expect that like Clinton, he will meddle and meddle and meddle,.depending on how… advisable… it will become.
I like McCain’s straight talk. Obama does a better job delivering his speeches though partly because of his charisma and partly I think because he seems to memorize what he needs to say.
The one-on-one debates should expose the real Obama and McCain. Prepared speeches are no good. They’re mostly designed to give potential voters what they want to hear.
Exactly, Drima. And so far, it feels like Obama is all prepared speeches.
“I think he kept quiet all this time to get the support of people beyond center-left. Now that he has the nomination, he doesn’t need that support anymore.”
You know, I really hope that’s true.
As for Israel’s capital, it’s Jerusalem.
I don’t care whether the UN accept it or not.
Tel Aviv is simply no capital.
This surprises me, it really does…
It just came to my mind that Obama, with his left-wing moon bat credentials, has the power to shut up the moon bats.
If a man with his credentials is on Israel’s side, we could reach a peace without unnecessary compromises. What Obama says, the left cannot dismiss.
Perhaps we are seeing a second Tony Blair?
(Can it be true? Am I becoming an Obama fan? It cannot be!)
The car will be the same car, the driving policies will remain unchanged, so what’s the point of changing the licensed driver?
Israel’s capital, Israel, what’s israel by the way?
Yes, but the car’s licence plate says “Israel”.
Muahahahaha!
Hi Sudanese Thinker!
Firstly, the Israeli government is not set on dividing Jerusalem. The leftist government of Olmert has said Jerusalem is on the table to be negotiated, but they are not saying Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel.
Secondly, every US presidential candidate speaks of moving the embassy to Jerusalem. Every single one. And none have done it. It’s nice of Obama to say such things, but I see no reason to believe he means it, given none of the other candidates have meant what they said.
Thirdly, Obama spoke of having an active hand in the ‘negotiation’ process, which is usually a bad sign for Israel. Ideally, the US government will not interfere with the sovereignty of the Israeli government. But again, every US president appears to not care so much about Israeli sovereignty.
Overall, more of the same. Obama only shocked people because they expected him to say some overtly bad things, which he did not say.
But in any case, why should this speech matter? Okay, he said nice things…and? A speech is meaningless. I like to see action. Where is Obama’s legislative record? He is an unknown, whose only real legislative record is to vote against declaring the Revolutionary Guard a terror group. His associations are with Carter-philes. (Brzezinski, Malley, Powers) Then of course is his Rashid Khalidi association.
The bottom line: I see no reason why I should believe Obama will be ‘good’ for Israel. Whether he will or would be worse than Bush remains to be seen.
I have liked McCain since way back. I think he is a bit of a maverick and not a party idealogue. He seems to vary his stances from middle right to middle left and I think he is willing to give the middle finger to dems and reps. which is certainly something I can agree with.
On Jerusalem…the Arabs don’t need it…To me, for them, it is primarily a symbol of their not backing down, brave defiance and all that stuff…If they were smart enough to understand how vital Jerusalem is to even the marginal Jew…they could get a whole lot of concessions on stuff that would really matter to them…But they won’t back down…and will win another bitty witty victory and lose a lot…
I am for all kinds of horse trading if those dudes would learn to be decent neighbors…but as open as I am…Jerusalem is a Jewish city…They and the Christians can control their monuments and holy sites and neighborhoods etc…But Jerusalem is Jewish
Same old sad story…
Obama’s comment about an undivided Jerusalem has been revised:

I maintain what I said earlier. Every ‘peace negotiation,’ from Camp David, to Madrid, to the Oslo, to Annapolis, consists on some level of America telling Israel what to do.
Obama is no different than anyone else.
To me, he is just a politician. They say whatever they think will win them the election.
The only thing I got from Obama’s AIPAC speech is that he values the Jewish vote more than he does the Muslim vote.
I on the other hand, Drima, can’t wait for the Euro ‘08 to start so I have something else to keep myself busy with. I’m tired of Bambi’s carrots on a stick sketches.
Obama is just another guy who’ll say anything, do anything and probably even believe anything (temporarily) to be the most powerful motherfucker on earth.
Really, both McCain and Obama are empty suits. The question is only of who’s riding them - moderate conservatives (McCain) or extremist Left (Obama). Obama sure as hell is an excellent suit, by the by - he’s non-white (automatically making him good in the eyes of many extreme Leftists), he’s comparatively good-looking (automatically making him good in the eyes of many morons), he a good speaker (automatically making him good in the eyes of many shallow people), he’s willing to sell his own grandmother for another vote…
Perfect. Just who are this suit’s handlers, though?
And I just hope he’s another Carter, riding the “change” wave for personal profit and aggrandizement. With some of the anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-Western supporters this suit’s got, I do kind of worry about what deals he closed with whom for political gain.
Well, that was it, I suppose.
Change.
He changed his opinion on Jerusalem.
Just when I thought I understood what so many like about him. He gives hope, doesn’t he?
And then he takes it away again.
The weird thing is that the Jerusalem thing actually worked.
Just hours after Obama’s announcement Hamas came out from under their rock to say that they won’t accept a “Palestine” without East-Jerusalem. USUALLY Hamas demand EVERYTHING. But they felt they were under attack by the very candidate they thought was on their side.
Obama was SO close to actually getting us closer to peace.
But making his statement a lie was more important to him than peace. It’s ridiculous.
Change.
Change is very important. There has to be one change per day.
An Obama-led America will be an interesting partner in international diplomacy.
“he’s non-white (automatically making him good in the eyes of many extreme Leftists)”
Don’t forget, he is also non-Jewish.
If the extreme leftists ever get their wish, a president who is a minority in all categories (ethnicity, race, religion, politics, and gender), they would end up with an orthodox Jewish black Republican man.
There are more blacks than Jews in America.
Obama’s minority is what real minorities regard as the majority.
I somehow don’t see the extremist left supporting minorities as such.
Democratic presidential candidates supported by the Kennedies who support Israel:

“Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided.”
hmm..The Jerusalem issue will never be solved.
There will never be a solution and it is stated in the Quran. Jews and Muslims can never get along as Jews are condemned by Allah S.W.T and the fight for Jerusalem will go on until resurrection day.
“There will never be a solution and it is stated in the Quran. Jews and Muslims can never get along as Jews are condemned by Allah S.W.T and the fight for Jerusalem will go on until resurrection day.”
What does the Quran say about Jerusalem?
Anybody here read what LGF found on Weblogs on Obama’s site?
Some of the texts seem like recycled material from 1930s Germany.
Change!
America is changing, indeed.
Obama is living proof that skin colour doesn’t matter. Blacks can be just as ignorant and racist as whites.
Andrew, I haven’t read those weblogs, but I’ve had a chance to encounter some of the more scatterbrained Obama supporters around in the great electronic wastelands, and they scare me. I never had an idea that a personality cult was such an active part of the Obama campaign - Obama Is The Change?
I thought this was elections in the US, not in Venezuela, Cuba, or the late Soviet Union. I thought people were intelligent (and cynical) enough to judge a politician by his views and integrity, and not by empty slogans and fake smiles.
Unfortunately, it would seem that I have yet again become too wavering in my own cynical world view - there will always be idiots out there, people willing to vote for fakery and a wave. People who would give fanatical support to a politician.
“There will never be a solution and it is stated in the Quran. Jews and Muslims can never get along as Jews are condemned by Allah S.W.T”
stranger,
such interpretations are the result of tradionalist so-called scholars injecting their political stances into theology in order to use theology to justify their politics or the politics of the ruling dictator. It’s all lies, dirty, deceitful lies.
Roman,
On the plus side, the vast majority of comments on Hillary’s Web site come from Hillary supporters who will now vote for McCain because Obama scares them!
On the plus side, the vast majority of comments on Hillary’s Web site come from Hillary supporters who will now vote for McCain because Obama scares them!
That’s something that even some Brooklyn ultra-Orthodox Jews are considering - and US Jews are some of the most traditional Democrats in the US. The more religious among them though, are starting to wonder why they’re not voting for someone who actually shares some of their views - and why blindly voting Democrat is such a great idea.
I have hardly ever heard such views from US Orthodox Jews. They, like nearly all Jews in the US, have been voting Democrat since the dawn of time - it’s practically a tradition for them. They would have voted for Hillary without batting an eyelash, but Obama? Obama makes them stop and wonder. Hillary was a plastic politician and they would have taken her crap hook, line, and sinker, but Obama has… interesting friends. And supporters. Makes his crap kind of difficult to swallow.
…which will soon start people saying at how the Evil Jews aren’t voting for Obama because he’s black. Because Jews are notorious black-haters, it would seem. Especially Brooklyn Jews. Ask Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan, they’re experts on New-York Jews.
LGF just retracted the statement that blogs on the Obama site are moderated. They’re not.
Drima,
Blog entries are not moderated, but creation of blogs is subject to moderation; which means that the moderators did know about at least the titles of the blogs.
And as with Ron Paul it is not so much what the politician himself does, but whom he attracts.
If moon bats and anti-Semites and racists vote Obama AND he doesn’t reject them, what does that mean?
