Horrible Connection

by Drima on April 10, 2008

My internet that is. It’s been raining cats and monkeys these past few days and the connection has been excruciatingly slow in my hostel room. Heck, I’ve been trying to get this update posted for the whole damn day. I hope the problem gets settled soon by the IT department. On the bright side, since I couldn’t surf anything, I did manage to seriously study and get a lot done.  Gosh, who knew learning French would be such a pain? I could have taken an easier subject to fill in my remaining credit hours. It’s too bad we don’t have Spanish.

Anyways, don’t worry. I’m not dead yet. Still alive and breathing.

Drima and the 08 US Elections

by Drima on April 7, 2008

How would a Sudanese Drima “vote” in the 2008 US elections? Stay tuned for the upcoming article. It should be published over at Pajamas Media soon.

My choice is not final since we still have a few more months to go. Anything can happen during this coming period. You never know. But for now, numerous factors played a role in the conclusion I reached. Two ultimately had a huge influence:

  1. a decision McCain made recently.
  2. Khartoum’s attitude towards the Democrats.

Comments on this post are closed. Let’s stir up things at PJM instead. I’ll announce the link once it’s available.

UPDATE: Here it is.

Today’s Three Linkies

by Drima on April 5, 2008

I’m going to be really busy for two or three days and so I leave you with these linkies:

  1. Schism (The Bible version of Fitna)
  2. Israel/Palestine: I’m split
  3. Breakfast in Khartoum

Cheers.

War Looms Over Sudan Again

by Drima on April 4, 2008

I haven’t blogged much about the small events that took place in Southern Sudan over the past few months but today, I need to. Things are piling up badly.

Abyei, that oil rich region in the North-South border, is arguably one of the most sticky issues that threatens the CPA and could possibly draw the country back to the cycles of war!

Today, Northern troops entered Abyei after the NCP expressed their objection to the appointment of an SPLM Administrator for Abyei.

… Recently, SPLA soldiers were reportedly attacked by heavily armed Misseriya gunmen and fingers are being pointed at the NCP in Khartoum for arming them. Now the northern army is building up in Abyei and who knows what will happen tomorrow!

The Misseriya are a nomadic tribe regarded as Arabs by Southern Sudanese in case you’re wondering.

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement must not collapse. Let’s hope the profits of oil are too sweet for both sides to lose. Otherwise it’s going to be a major disaster bigger than Darfur.
Sigh!

Aljazeera’s Recent Gaza Coverage

by Drima on April 4, 2008

I felt it was different in tone and harshness. At first I thought it might have been because of this. Now me believes it might have more to do with something else. Just take a look at this as an example:

It is shameful that Hamas is depending on Syrian and Iranian accounts and is transforming the Palestinian cause into a bank for political objectives that are transferred to those two parties. The price: the blood of innocent victims that is shed for the sake of oiling the political wheel that corroded in Damascus and Tehran.

It is absolutely disgraceful. How many more crimes will be committed in the name of the Palestinian cause?

Arab media sentiments towards Hamas are changing thanks to the strings attached between them and Syria, and by extension Iran.

If only the Palestinians had responsible leadership genuinely interested in the plight of its own people.

Irshad Manji and An-Na’im at Heretic Muslims Conference

by Drima on April 2, 2008

Too bad I couldn’t be there to attend it. The idea for the conference’s theme was inspired by An-Na’im himself who is prominently featured today at the front page of the Christian Science Monitor.

I am so ecstatic over the publicity his immensely important scholarly work is receiving. It’s also cool to see an intellectually diverse group of people like him and Manji working together to achieve a common goal we all share.

People, we are seeing the real beginnings of a growing Islamic reformation movement! And since I’ve been a long time Ustaz Taha fan, I’d naturally like to see the ideas he inspired spearhead it. I swear, I am sooo loving this. More publicity for ‘Islam and the Secular State‘ please!

As for the Muslim Heretics Conference, Manji blogged about it here. I’m awaiting her upcoming thoughts on Geert Wilder’s ‘Fitna’.

Which Is Better For Sudan, a Democrat or Republican President?

by Drima on April 1, 2008

Dear Sudanese boys and girls in da house,

dump your thoughts in the comments section. I have my answer and facts but I’d like to hear you out before I publish my choice and concerns in a long upcoming article. I may include some of your comments.

Another way of rephrasing the question could be, which is better for Sudan, America intervening militarily in Darfur or not? In other words, would you like to see this very possible scenario play out or not?

The results of this year’s US elections can and will have a huge impact on the future direction of Sudan. I hope you’re not apathetic.

Americans and other readers, you’re more than welcome to join in.
