TED Talk: The Pentagon’s New Map For War and Peace

Thomas Barnett is an international security strategist who has advised US leaders on national security since the end of the Cold. In this funny lecture, he explains how the United States has an amazing capability to wage war and win it but isn’t particularly good at everything else. By “everything else” he means stabilizing a country and winning the peace. Good talk.

    He’s a good salesman, anyway :)

Sounds like a reasonably good idea, in general. His “Sysadmin” force was the role the UN was meant to play back in the old days, but hasn’t. I can see why the Marines in the audience like to punch him in the face after he does this lecture. US Marines are the best ground combat troops in the world right now, and he wants to put them in the follow-on Sysadmin force? Craziness. Marines are not good at static security duties, and that’s exactly what he suggests the role of the Marines should be - protecting the “Sysadmin” force. He may as well suggest the USMC be disbanded, because that isn’t what they do, and nobody will join the Marines to guard some aid workers :O
