Miss Arab World 2007: Sudanese Participant

Recently a competition called Miss Arab World 2007 was held in Cairo without a bikini in sight. You can read more about it here. A Sudanese participated in the competition but Miss Bahrain won. I spent a long time looking for the Sudanese participant’s picture and I finally found it! Apparently her name is Sumaiah Mohamed and here she is.

Not bad, but I’ve seen hotter. ;)

I was excited when I found the picture in SudanForum but as I scrolled down, the excitement evaporated.

I’m telling you, we Sudanese are wonderful. I think even when it comes to cotton candy, we Northerners and Southerners will still find a reason to argue and bring out the never-ending Arab/African debate. Just have a look at how badly the thread deteriorated. Here are some random quotes.

SoulBrother:
I give her a B- I seen more hotter Sudanese girl and personally ,,, I don’t Dig skinny girls any how ,, Good luck to her

RenHeit:
Anybody got her number, I would like to congratulate her for participating and tell her what a wonderful job her mom and dad did :)

GoldFace:
مسابقات الجمال حرااااااااااام (Drima translating: Beauty contests are haraaaam i.e. sinful)

Unconscious Lady:
Goldface If They wore a Bikini or anything of that sort . We could say it is Haram. But they didn’t ok.

TTG:
Where this took place and who were the voters?
If the voters were arabs or muslims, then, you don’t expect them to vote for a nigger, they will never do that.

note:
Except for the word MUSLIMS (which you are always trying to stuff it anywhere), You are right, i agree with you arabs will never vote for Sudanese.

RAM~MI~RAN:
Why didn’t they called it Miss terrorists world?, cuz that is the only thing they are good at…

Ana-omdurman:
a winner of a beauty contest is not just about a beautiful face and beautiful legs (according to its founders) but it is a competition compromises of knowledge & intellegence as well. True in North sudan there are alot more beautiful girls than this but they may not have the intellegence capacity to pass the questions.

papimorenito:
i think it said miss Sudan on her sach not miss north sudan. wasn’t it this knid of atitute that started both the the noth-south war and north-west wra? this exclusive nature of the northern arabs.

we don’t need a CPA nor DPA, we need change of atitute and mentality. or els both CPA and DPA are useless

papimorenito:
on a good day i can excuse identifying as an arab on linguistic grounds, but say you identify youself as an arab on political grounds, now tell me that ain’t propaganda.

Ana-omdurman:
It is miss north sudan that competes in the arab world, that is why I used north sudan as example. It is miss Dinka that usually competes in East africa & Uganda and america

papimorenito
although this may be true, it is the kind of atitute i’m talking about, why do we segragate ourselves, when miss dinka goes to represent sudan in African contest as you claimed, there is nothing that stipulates that a northern can not represent sudan in an African beauty contest as the competition is open to african countries, so why do you assume that a dinka can not go and represent sudan in an arab beauty contest, because she is not muslim or because she is not arab

Read it all from beginning to end here if you want to.  Sigh! More reason to celebrate our identity crisis! But for the sake of being more optimistic, I must say there were some sane people there.

I agree with SoulBrother. Indeed, there are hotter & prettier Sudanese girls than this girl. I’ve seen much prettier Sudanese girls in Sudan and outside Sudan.

Ya, Amjad I know. She’s just okay. I bet without the make up she’ll look below average. There are definitely hotter BUT most of them will never pose for photos like this one. Northern Sudanese families are generally conservative and they won’t let their daughters participate in such contests.

On the other hand, looks aren’t everything. Some are super hot, but their brains are simply hollow. Such a turn off.

“Miss Arab World 2007 was held in Cairo without a bikini in sight.”

Am I the only one who misunderstood this ?
Mind in the gutter aside, she’s pretty alright, but sister Hipster beats her.

    Sudan’s Sumaiah:…

Beauty contests and blog commenters, and Miss Arab World. (Sudanese Thinker)……

That child is beautiful. God did a good job on her.

If you want a fuller figure, catch her later in her lifetime.

    Awwwwwww…

lol “..we Northerners and Southerners will still find a reason to argue and bring out the never-ending Arab/African debate..”

I guess there are lots of people in those forums who would rather point out every small thing that divides us and totally down play the things we have in common, and the strength that comes with it.

That said, I think miss Sudan looks okay. Not too sure though if she fits into the Arab imagination of what ‘beauty’ really is.

  8. Drima on August 16th, 2007 7:34 am

SudaneseReturnee, we are surely in agreement.

  9. tsedek on August 16th, 2007 10:39 am

well, i think she’s very, very pretty. maybe this is just not a complimentory photo, but you can see she looks great.

  10. Kawthar on August 16th, 2007 2:17 pm

Oh, the gossipping her family will have to endure!

  11. Drima on August 16th, 2007 2:33 pm

Hehe, Kawthar, trust me I’m alrealy hearing enough of it from my conservative Sudanese friends. Many of them are going on and on about how her dad is loony for letting her participate is such an un-Sudanese event.

Me? I’m cool with it. It’s not like she acted in a porn movie.

  12. kizzie on August 16th, 2007 3:30 pm

I think she is lovely but hey, she wasnt going to win if she was 10 times prettier.

  13. Ahmad al-Safawi on August 16th, 2007 8:23 pm

Personally, i do not love these kind of contests. Drima you would probably refer to me as very conservative, but i do not like it emotionally.

Guys, you have a problem. Why do you always complain that the arabs are racist to you. It is like we muslims in Europe always claiming that we are discriminated, with or without a reason. Grow up, man. It is not like the arab world consists of camel-riders just waiting to get a chance to kill some of those filthy blacks…

The lord is ONE and the father is ONE.

  14. Drima on August 17th, 2007 7:09 am

Ahmad al-Safawi, actually no, I’d only refer to you as conservative. Please keep in mind that I don’t intend to mean it in a bad way. I understand that in my opinion, I’m in the minority.

I don’t mind conservative views like yours. I only do if people start enforcing them on me.

  15. Ahmad al-Safawi on August 17th, 2007 5:38 pm

Okay good, Drima. I have the same view - i do not mind modernistic views, only if people start enforcing them on everybody else.

But Drima, don’t you think that black people has the same victimhood mentality in general that many muslims in general also possess? I mean, you will very often hear muslims complaining about discrimination here in Europe with or without a reason - the same with the blacks elsewhere, being they muslims or not. And the posts in this thread confirms me that sudanese people often has the same feelings towards the arab world.

Myself, i’m kind of “mulatto”, with both african and arab ancestors, and being muslim i understand both views. Muslims in Europe and elsewhere DO face discrimination, as well as black people DO face racism…

But honestly, we have a problem with this mentality. I am looking forward to hear your view.

she looks like the djibutian girls I met in France ; some of them were/are in my step-family, my second marriage father in law was djibutian(dead since a decade) ; quite a nice man, he teached my elder son how to play cards and to cheat  ; when he became middle-aged, he was blind and learnt the specific alphabet ; the cards were marcked with points so that he could recognize them ; my son learnt the signs too ; when they went to local cards challenges they could comunicate without anyone notice it ; so they often won
