Apparently he did:

July 19, 2007 (NASHVILLE, Tennessee) — US President George W. Bush said Thursday that he had considered, and discarded, the idea of sending US troops unilaterally to Sudan’s Darfur province to halt what he calls “genocide” there

“I made the decision not to send US troops unilaterally into Darfur,” he said. “I made the decision in consultations with allies, as well as consultations with members of Congress and activists.”

Excellent choice dude. Good. Please don’t send them. More children, both Darfurian and American will be orphaned if you do.

It would have been a bad PR move.

For some reason tha vast majority of Arabs consider stopping genocide against Muslims “anti-Islamic”.

The Bosnians and Albanians were just lucky.

The US doesn’t have a problem with troop numbers, as far as I know. It’s getting Congress to fund the venture that’s the only real hurdle.

Craig would know better about that.

Roman is right. Recruitment levels have been keeping up with goals; it’s only the isolated months where it falls slightly lower than desired that gets all the press.

I would add that another major factor in troop levels is the continuing legacy of the Rumsfeld doctrine, which aimed to rely on special forces, and reduce the levels of conventional troops. The recent American successes in Somalia are a great example of that, as all of the victories there were achieved with US special forces acting in tandem with Ethiopian troops, who provided the real boots on the ground.

Rumsfeld might be gone, but his influence persists among Pentagon decision makers.

As for Darfur, if the presence of special forces in Chad is any indication, the US already has a presence in Darfur….
