I hate propaganda
Money used in this video clip could have been funneled otherwise to help the cause
Heh? Propaganda? Why would you call it propaganda? The different Sudanese guys in the video were each telling their story and perspective. Green Day’s intent for making this video isn’t propaganda dear, it’s just to get the attention of people.
On the money issue, some needs to be spent on advertising the cause and the rest for charitable causes. You can’t expect huge donations unless the word spreads out. When it comes to the Save Darfur coalition, from what I read, they spent tons of money on advertising but little for actual charity, something which I resent. It wasn’t balanced.
Zero for advertising, 100% for charity isn’t a practical and effective approach.
The media is saturated with Darfur. People did not know where Sudan is, until 2003, and still cannot connect Sudan with Darfur, or vice versa.
That Darfur is a disaster is no news, everyone knows already.
Less talk, more deed. I personally never donate through large coalitions for whichever cause there is, but rather find local NGOs to ensure that the largest portion of my money actually reaches the needy, and not to finance some Big Shot executive’s trip to Geneva to have a “Talk” about Darfur.
If the executive truly wants to go and talk, he can fund himself. But awareness campaigns should exist regardless, and it’s up to the people said campaigns reach to decide what to fund, the NGO’s or the awareness campaign.
The media is saturated only because of the awareness campaign. Is it perfect? No. Nothing is. But instead of just grumbling at the imperfections, use the working parts for your benefit.
Because without the big campaign, few would bother looking up the NGO’s.
“That Darfur is a disaster is no news, everyone knows already.”
True, I agree but the momentum needs to be maintained, otherwise Darfur will get burried under all the news about Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine etc.
Sorry, the Green Day version just sucks. A really good remake of this Beatles classic was done by the “Screaming Trees” if you can find it.
Nope, couldn’t find it but instead found this:
