The three sustained cuts from the barbed wire and bruises as they stumbled while the Egyptian guards chased after them

Yea i’m sure the three of them ran, tripped and fell on the bottom of the officers shoe. Oh yea and one of them accidentally ran head first into his baton!

I don’t blame these guys one bit for trying and catch myself cheering them on, though it will likely just lead to problems…

However…mark my words…it is just a matter of time before somebody gets killed…either by the Bedouins, the Egyptians or an Israeli soldier…sneaking around that border, at night…man that is just playing with fire.

(To the guy above me) No the Chinese are perfectly happy to stay in Sudan, in fact I can see the oil companies compound from here. :)

Drima, I did not know there any Sudanese escaping Israel… I heard Sengalese/Malian and general west african getting on boats and risking their lives to get Spain… or even ethiopian/eritrean trying to get to Italy via boats.. risking everything..

I know life in those countries is difficulty but some of doing these escapes are usually somewhat of “middle class” in their countries otherwise how can the afford the “smuggling fee” which range 1000s of dollars.

To some extent some of these people do not know what is waiting for them in the country they are trying to escape. The watch the movies and lifestyle in most of the european societies or in this case israel and think their life would transformed..

There is always going to people trying to improve their lives by going to another country. This will never change..

However, as the economy improves in their countries, people would like to stay home instead feeling the condition in their countries is so hopeless to risk their lives going to another where they do not expect.

I know this is simplistic or idealistic.. but I give loans on this website… and it trys to help small business owners around the world. It follows Dr. Mohammad Yunus Grameen bank formula…

Interesting article. As an immigrant myself, I cannot but help sympathize. I came to America legally, but I feel that America should (and would only benefit if it did) admit more immigrants legally.

I would also dispute the point brought up by jonah84, - that these immigrants most likely come from a middle class - as often emigrants from poor countries are young men whose smuggling fees are paid by large, extended families, who pool their monies together in order to benefit from the wires coming from immigrant workers earning dollars and euros. I have several Hispanic friends here in New York who know of these things.

By the way, Drima, can you tell us more about this Sudan Tribune that published the article (without me bothering to do more research :-). Your opinion is more worthwhile…:-), as I do trust you more. (P.S. I’m not being sarcastic).

Are they an expat publication? Or based in Sudan?

Finnpundit, i would like to clarify what I meant.

My reference to “middle class” is directed to more african immigrants and I do know people who tried the mediterrean trek to Italy on boat after crossing the Libyan dessert.

In terms of latin american immigrants, I have worked in mexico and I have lived in california and most those illegal immigrants tend to be labors from mexican countryside. When I was working on project with a mexican telecommunication company, I had a similiar discussion with one of my mexican co-worker and he pointed out too me, the most of people heading for United States are people from the countryside or farmers. Their main objective is not to necessarily settle in United States but work there and eventual comeback.. but things change once they get there… Of course in the United States job opportunities for illegal are a little more compared to Europe.. this is what I have heard not drawn from experience..

Now, in the African case, from talking to people, the immigrants heading to Europe tend to be city people… not necessarily in worst economic situation within their societies. I know person whose father was shop owner.. who thought by making it Europe everything would improve.. he almost lost his life in the mediterrean sea.. he is now in italy but still not working.. and having difficult adjusting to society.. of course this is just one case and I do not want to generalize.

In the African case, it is just too risky.. there are stories of people been lift behind in the desert by smugglers.. I could understand if person is starving or there is a war but believe some of African immigrants are not aware of major risk and there is an element of naivete of what they will have in Europe.

Also, I do not want to speak for the mexican immigrants but the risk I believe is not as much as the African case..

but you are right most of the people are young.

Finnpundit, they’re an expat publication based in Paris. Opposition basically and they more or less gather any articles from the media related to Sudan and put them up on their website. That’s why most of the articles are anti-government.

Sudan Vision on the other hand is pro-government and based in Sudan.
