Burj Al-Arab: The Biggest Christian Cross In the Muslim World?

LOL, I know, I know. Now this might be old news to some of you but hey what the hell. Alright so yesterday a friend came up to me and told me something along the following lines: “ey yo man, did you know that the filthy Christian British architects who designed Burj Al-Arab secretly included a Cross in the building’s design? After the project was finished and the architects got paid all their money, one of them broke out the secret about their dirty accomplishment, the biggest Christian Cross in the Muslim world. Can you believe this crap? This is a freaking insult to Muslims!”… Oh well, so I did a little research and behold! I present to you the biggest Christian Cross in the Muslim World:

Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, UAE
There was a considerable controversy regarding the claim that the structure looks like a huge Christian cross when viewed by anyone sailing into city. Some locals claim that this was an intentional move on the part of the British architects. This issue is more ironic when one considers that the Tower of the Arabs is widely considered to be Dubai’s most important landmark.

Ya right! LOL. This is kinda like me looking at the shape of the clouds in the sky only to start seeing something… oh no… a shape… crap, it looks like a cartoon. HUH!! Oh no they DID NOT!! Another cartoon? In the sky this time? Oh those evil bloody filthy cunning Zionist CrUSAders! They just keep getting smarter with their dirty games and insults.

Jihaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!!!

UPDATE: I just wanted to clarify something. My friend is not in the habbit of calling all people from other religions “filthy”. He just thinks the evil ones are… ehm ehm… in this case the British architects. Oh ya and there’s one more thing he told me. The cross isn’t just a cross. It’s also facing Mecca! Oh well… sigh! The conspiracy theories continue.

This story is told back-to-back with another one which says that apparently any cars registered in Dubai, that have one of the older licence plates which have an image of the Burj Al Arab on them, aren’t allowed to drive into Saudi Arabia.

We haven’t been able to confirm the veracity of either story, but they contribute to the legend of Dubai!

christian are just EVIL… and they try to impose their sign just everywhere in the world.. It’s not only the muslim world that has to suffer.

Ever heard about the “cross” that appears on the TV-Tower in the eastern part of Berlin (formerly known as part of the GDR) when the sun shines?
Well, you probably did not hear about it, because it is not that huge and well-known as Burj-Al-Arab..
Some people call it “the pope’s revenge”..

We are evil. Too bad that some people are clever enough to find it out.. often before we do it ourselves ;).

  4. nominally challenged on February 8th, 2007 7:25 pm

LOL - that cross is getting in everywhere. TV antennas, telegraph poles and now this!

Are there really people who take this as an insult to Islam? I just find that really weird …

  5. Finnpundit on February 8th, 2007 9:49 pm

Sigmund Freud, of course, said that all tall buildings, - including skyscrapers, church steeples, and minarets - are monuments for the penis.

  6. Roman Kalik on February 9th, 2007 12:10 am

Well, ole Freud is a prime example of what, in my opinion, happens when someone projects his own percieved failings on everyone else.

Sorry, Sigmund, but life really is more than sexual urges.

Same with the Muslim world. Sorry, Muslim Arabs, life isn’t just about you. Being proud and hateful, and projecting this pride and hate on everyone else won’t change that.

    And really, paranoia isn’t fun.

  7. Roman Kalik on February 9th, 2007 12:22 am

Disclaimer: the above is a generalization, and is not meant to insult those who shouldn’t be.

  8. Black Kush on February 9th, 2007 7:42 am

I called it the Arab paranoi and continuous sense of the “victim” ideology. I agree with Drima that you can just see any shape on anything when you go looking for it. The brain feels the gaps for you!

Have you heard of the story that the words Coca Cola in Arabic when read backwards in a mirror say “no mecca, no mohammed?” Just pure paranoi.

  9. precious on February 9th, 2007 11:04 am

LOL.. hey now those “Alqaeda” people gona have plans of blowin it off.. hehe & Dubai will loose one of it major investments..
“I called it the Arab paranoi and continuous sense of the “victim” ideology”

    Truly said Black Kush…

Precious - this was the Evil Plan ™ of the Evil Jooz ™ when they sent their Imperialist CrUSAder piggy apes to architect this building!

    Mwuahahaha! (I claim credit)

  11. Ros on February 9th, 2007 10:21 pm

Looked like a sailing boat to me so I googled Burj Al Arab abd sailing boat..
    This
“Renowned for being the tallest dedicated hotel in the world, this amazing building rises above the sea to a spectacular height of over 1,000 feet. A unique architectural masterpiece, it has been cleverly designed in the shape of a yacht’s billowing sail”
    or this
“the hotel’s conference centre represents a “Dhow” (traditional Arabic boat), ”
    or this
“Burj Al Arab is built on a triangle base in the shape of an Arabian Dhow ship vessel that stands upright, with a glass exterior on the Gulf side and a Teflon sail façade on land-side”.

No offence meant to your mate, but a little enhancing of his/her aesthetics skills might make the world a decidedly happier and beautiful place for him/her. It really is a stunning building and the folks of Dubai should be proud of it. Maybe one of the great manmade landmarks of the world, it is certainly the tallest operating hotel in the world.

  12. Ros on February 9th, 2007 10:28 pm

A picture at this site which shows the building from a different angle leaves no doubt it is a sailing ship. Just beautiful. Why on earth do so many Arabs see put downs and misery at every opportunity. Why not instead see a remarkable building from a part of the world demonised so often as anti-modern. The architects did well, but so did Dubai for commissioning approving and building it.

    “the filthy Christian British architects”

Do many Muslims casually refer to Christians as “filthy”? How much respect do they think Christians ought to have for Muslims?

“their dirty accomplishment, the biggest Christian Cross in the Muslim world”

And there goes that guy’s respect for Jesus, a prophet of Islam.

  14. The Raccoon on February 9th, 2007 11:18 pm

Ros - “Why on earth do so many Arabs see put downs and misery at every opportunity” - because it gives them something to do, of course. It’s awefully boring in a desert. The only entertainment availiable is fighting, starting religions, thinking of math (although this seems to hav become unfashionable lately) and coming up with good conspiracy theories. Did you know that the Arabian desert is, in fact, a desert because of the Evil Jooz ™? Why, it was a beautiful green paradise before we (Evil Jooz ™) returned to Israel and stole all the Arab water. Well known fact, this.

Andrew - according to Islam, Jesus was never crucified, IIRC. So a cross wouldn’t count for a symbol of Issa. It’s like saying Muslims should revere the Star of David because most of their prophets were Evil Jooz ™. But according to Islam, they were not Jooz, of course - why, they were Muslims!

  15. Esra'a on February 10th, 2007 1:07 am

Do many Muslims casually refer to Christians as “filthy”?

    No.

We got huge respect for Christians in Bahrain with over 6 churches. And never in my entire life did I meet a Muslim who referred to a Christian as “filthy.” So please, no generalizations.

  16. Suzanne on February 10th, 2007 10:09 am

If you look carefully you see three stars of David :D

  17. Suzanne on February 10th, 2007 10:14 am

@Andrew Brehm, muslims dont believe jezus got crusified.

  18. Esra'a on February 10th, 2007 12:38 pm

I say, who gives a shit? The majority of Dubai are now probably Christians anyways. This isn’t a place for Arabs if you notice, it is run by foreign investors and top-notch Arab businessmen who couldn’t care less about these things as long as it shows them the money.

There is hardly anything specifically ‘Arab’ in Dubai these days, it’s very artificial. Even if it was intended to be a cross, it doesn’t matter. I say what’s sick about Dubai is not only the fact that the culture was completely replaced by an overwhelmingly Westernized one, but that slavery still exists on a pretty large scale and so does human trafficking.

That shocks me way more than the possibility of this being a big cross.

  19. Andrew Brehm on February 10th, 2007 5:34 pm

“That shocks me way more than the possibility of this being a big cross.”

    And indeed it should.

  20. Hipster on February 11th, 2007 1:59 pm

When I first heard the claim, I thought it was absurd.
nzm, I have heard a similar story. They have stopped putting the Burj Al Arab symbol on licence plates now.

    I second Esraa’s last comment.

I agree that Burj Al Arab looks dazzling from the outside but I don’t like how it looks inside(it’s comparatively small. There are better-looking & spacious hotels). The only thing that you don’t see everyday in a hotel is the golden taps, stair rails..etc & the aquarium. The view is incredible too.By and large, I think it is a waste of money that couldve been put to better use.But then again, Dubai is all about the ” bling-bling”.

  21. nzm on February 11th, 2007 4:34 pm

You can see the interior of the Burj Al Arab on our blog.

Just type Burj Al Arab in the Google bar at the top and click Search this blog, and a couple of posts will come up.

One is of the interior at the base, and the other is in the Al Muntaha bar which is in the horizontal bar of “the cross” which you can see in the image.

Our 10 year old son calls the horizontal bar “the squashed toilet roll”, because when viewed from the sides of the hotel, that’s what it looks like!

  22. nzm on February 11th, 2007 4:59 pm

Drima: The cross isn’t just a cross. It’s also facing Mecca! Oh well… sigh! The conspiracy theories continue.

Your friend only needs to visit Google Earth to see where the “cross” on the BAA points to!

It points pretty faces out across the Gulf and the first landfall would be either Iran or Kuwait.

    Nowhere near Mecca!

  23. Hipster on February 12th, 2007 6:26 am

    nzm, thankx.Colourful pics:)

  24. Drima on February 12th, 2007 1:13 pm

Exactly nzm, that’s my whole point… how it’s so damn easy for some people just to be sheep and fall for the dumbest things ever… when I pointed something similar to my friend he just replied “whatever”… yes he’s my friend but he sure does amaze me with his “political insights” which 99.9% of the time are fed to him… I must admit that his geography is pretty bad though… I think a lot of people find conspiracy theories to be fascinating or something…

  25. Goobah on February 17th, 2007 3:52 pm

Muslims must stop using screws! Or letting the heretics do so! Built into every building are countless crosses! It must be stopped now!! Use bolts… there’s a reason they use the phrase “crescent wrench!”

  26. halalhippie on February 17th, 2007 8:39 pm

Ssshhhhh! Goobah…… It’s supposed to be a secret. Remember, the plan is to infest the Muslim world with zillions of screws with crosses in them, and when the Muslims find out they’ll collectively explode. :-)

    Oh dear

  27. Nizo on February 18th, 2007 5:37 pm

The whole Burj Al Arab cross controversy reminds me of those who complain that high rises are phallic and perpetuate patriarchal control of society and the suppression of women’s rights. BS… by people who look for reasons to feed their insecurities..

  28. Bullog on March 16th, 2007 9:36 am

LOL - alright, let’s start digging holes rather than building phallic buildings. And stop using the ‘+’-sign and replace it with a crescent, especially when dialing international numbers on your mobile! I have to remove these keys on my laptop and my mobile phone. Ever had a look at the map of Dubai? All these road junctions look like crosses- probably the work of some other filthy Christian town planners. And most of all: We have to reomove the Sydney Opera as it is the biggest Crescent in the Western world!

    ;)

I am a Muslim who resides in the great ROCKY MOUNTAINS. I have a sudden urge (probabaly sent down to me from ALLAH) to say this…I AM A MEXICAN!!!

  30. Tara on September 11th, 2007 3:24 am

Hmmm….the way I look at it, the architect is brilliantly telling the world that, facing Kaabah is the only direction we should all face. In this case he potrait the cross as his fellow christians. He is conveying a message to them which is ..”Lets all start facing the Kaabah,Prophet Isa faces the Kaabah and Islam is the only TRUE religion.”

    Sadakallahul Azim..

    :) Tara

Maybe its too late, but i heard that the UAE will destroy Burj Al-Arab once the new Dubai Tower is done!

  32. John McHammer on January 7th, 2008 5:39 am

Darling sweeeeetty, this is all just FIERCE ! Its HOT ! We love it ! Cross no cross who cares as long as its in style ! Lovely !!!!!!!!

  33. Ben on May 5th, 2008 6:04 am

Was just wondering that a multitude of so called tru lovers of islam are arguing over the cross at Burj al Arab……have B@lls demolish the structure and prove your loyalty….But no, Money and fame keeps everything suppressed even your one tru religion Islam.

Moreover Dubai has developed only infrastructurally but local mentality still ages ancient.
