Hasn’t Sami Yusuf Gotten Any Death Threats Yet?

I’m really surprised at how Sami Yusuf still hasn’t caused any big controversy or received any death threats until now. I mean, in my opinion this guy who in the last few years has become so famous is probably the first person ever to break the whole retarded Muslim taboo of “music accompanied with stringed instruments is haram” in such an open yet successful manner. Just 5 years ago, some retards used to bug the crap out of me because I play guitar. Some still do. Some even questioned my dad about his sanity and how on earth he would allow me to play guitar. “It’s HARAM” they would scream. Haram my Sudanese ass. I can NEVER imagine my life without music. I would rather lose my sense of sight than lose my sense of hearing.
I’ve got one word to describe how I feel about Sami Yusuf. RESPECT! I don’t know if many people are noticing this but he broke the “barrier” and we haven’t witnessed any visible whining from retarded anti-music Muslims. Not only that, but his music is truly deep and wonderful. I guess many approve of him silently. No? Check out his recent concert in Khartoum.

I had no idea some muslims thought there was something wrong with stringed instruments. Does this rule come from the Koran, or a Hadith? How do these same people feel about the piano? Technically the piano is a stringed instrument.
The Koran says nothing against stringed instruments or music in general. Music is perfectly allowed in Islam as long as it doesn’t violate Islamic ethics. For example Celien Dion’s “clean” songs or Yani’s are defintely not haram but Metallica, Akon, or 50 cent for example are haram due to the nature of the lyrics.
Most anti-music Muslims base their argument on *their* interpretation of Hadith and Sunnah. Yes even the Hadith and Sunnah can be interpretted differently by different Muslims.
I’m not sure how they feel about piano but the general idea is that only percussion instruments are allowed while everything else is considered haram (sinfull).
“I can NEVER imagine my life without music.” you can say that again, I have some friends who have been lecturing me on different stuff after my Hijab sayin that I should get it all perfect & that might include me stop listenin to music.. am like, ok.. I can quit ANYTHING but Music..

Sami Yusuf rocks..!!
His concert was amazing. He was so humble and polite.. portraying a great image of Islam.
Oh.. and he played the arabian ‘duf’ with this other guy.. it was off the hook!
(i know the duf is definitely not haram).
Bless you Drima! It is my first time to hear of the string imstrument being aharam in Islam! There are many Sudanese musicians using many times of string instruments for ages. Is the popular “wod”also considered haram?
Life must be really terrible under strict Islamic laws!
sami’s the man
I think the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens had a lot to do with shifting the approach to Islamically inspired music as popular music- although he doesn’t have any instrumental accompaniments to his songs. His music is still very melodic and beautiful and he popularised Islamic songs.
I watched a doco some time ago called “The rock star and the Mullah” about a Pakistani rock band who sing Islamically inspired songs but accompanied with heavy rock music. The doco followed the lead singer as he attempted to discuss music in Islam with different religious scholars- very interesting.
thanks TUS, I’m gonna search for that documentary and watch it online.
Apparently Cat Stevens - after becoming Yusuf Islam - had a overdose of Wahabbism and didn’t sing for many years. Alhamdulillah he got over it, he’s got the sweetest voice.
And Sami Yusuf ? yeah, great singer, could use some more “edge” for my taste.
But stringed instruments haram ? gimme a break, on a guitar you can play a hymn to God or Satan; it’s not the instrument. Use your heart and mind, and NOT the opinions of artistically impaired old men. Ijtihad
I think your right, but next time when you want to express your feelings can you please not use profanities.
jazakullah
I’ll try. It’s a bad habbit

Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v:
Narrated Abu ‘Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari that he heard the Prophet saying, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’ Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection.”
usamah nisar and Tazeem Ada, thanks for the concern and advice but have you both ever heard of something called ijtihad?
Sorry, I don’t simply swallow hadith or blindly follow what Islamic scholars/”scholars” say. I’m not a robot, I have a brain and I can think for myself. On Judgement Day saying “I did this and that because Islamic scholar so and so said it’s allowed” isn’t going to save me and neither will it save you.
Music is NOT haram.
