    Libyan, what *you* view as Islam may not be what *they* view as Islam. Any religion can be influenced by local culture, and exploited for power.
    They believe women are cattle, and should stay cattle. They also believe that a human life is a very cheap thing indeed.

    You are willing to see such things in the USA, yet you are not willing to see it in Islam.

    Both are made up from people. Neither group of people is somehow “purer” than the other.

    Libyan- not everything is a US conspiracy mate- but that’s exactly what they want you to think. They want you to think that there is some kind of US and Israeli led conspiracy designed to undermine Islam. Read Zawahri- he constantly refers to the use of propaganda to raise the consciousness of the ummah and rally them to jihad. The Jihadi’s realised early on that they would have to penetrate the minds of the masses- that their vision of an Islamic nation could not rely solely on elite jihadi groups.
    I think the West has really failed to use propaganda to combat this. Instead, the West has only managed to reinforce the jihadist’s message that the world is facing a global battle between Islam and the West. Like you, many Muslims I speak to are also all too quick to dismiss anything as a US conspiracy. I witnessed grown men fighting over whether or not Dafur was actually happening. One of them completely refused to believe that it was true- he could only describe it as a US conspiracy.
    Instead of dismissing this story, talk to women from Afghanistan who lived under Taliban rule. Listen to their stories. Talk to women who fled Afghanistan prior to the Taliban and let them tell you Afghanistan was a model for women’s education. Talk to the people- don’t take my word for it. If you cannot believe that humans, Muslim or not, can be so brutal and heartless talk to those who have lived it. Perhaps then you can accept that our religion has become diseased and that we need to fix it… soon.

    On a serious note, how can one sleep at night knowing that he has committed such a heinous crime? Do they read the Quran in reverse?No twinge of conscience watsoever.Aren’t they terrified of Allah’s wrath?

    There was a number of fascinating researches dealing with this question. The hunam mind is a complex machine, with numerous systems for dealing with trauma (and doing something like this is a major trauma). The usual techniques are disassociation and dehumanization - that is, the people doing these things do not think about what they’re doing and do not view the people they torture and kill as people.

    But then again, the various mental blocks are far from perfect. The Einsatzgruppen received special training to enable them to deal with the trauma (including growing a cute pet dog from puppy to adult and then killing it with their own hands), and still they often suffered from assorted psychotic problems and many commited suicide.

    Mike- it is not that women’s rights are bad for men, it is that some men (ie you) do not know how to live in a world where women are recognised for more than just their child bearing qualities.

    Now, I am no feminist, I am infact extremely critical of Western feminism- a few white, middle class women took to the streets and burned their bras- whoopdi do!

    Meanwhile Aboriginal women in Australia did not get the vote until 50 years later. Meanwhile FGM is still widely practiced in many countries around the world. Meanwhile there is still no equal representation in Parliament despite women being 51% of the population. Meanwhile women in Pakistan are jailed if they are raped. Meanwhile Chinese orphanages are chocka block with unwanted daughters. Meanwhile a widow in some parts of India is forced to burn herself. Meanwhile immigrant women in Australia are still deputed to the lowest paid, least skilled jobs.

    What have women gained from feminism? Unless you are white and middle class, not bloody much. If you happen to live in Africa, absolutely jack shit and if you happen to live in some parts of Asia, also absolutely jack shit. If you happen to be poor- congratulations, feminism has given you the right to vote for political party that will keep you poor. If you happen to be Muslim, feminism has given you a whole lot of Western women who can speak on your behalf because you are oppressed and muted and have no voice. If you happen to be a migrant woman- good for you, feminism has given you the right to spend your life on the factory assembly line earning around $6 per hour.

    No, I am certainly not a fan of feminism. Feminism lost its way a long time ago and lost its focus on achieving fundamental social rights for women. That doesn’t mean I agree with you though Mike.
