Sudanese Activist in Canada Establishes an Organization Promoting Friendship With Israel

by Drima on November 9, 2006

Two days ago I stumbled upon this article (Arabic sorry) which dropped my jaw all the way to the floor but no it didn’t stop there. My jaw actually went through the South East Asian earth crust where I am, right into the earth’s super hot core and finally exploded out of the other side of earth somewhere near Panama. Pulling back my jaw was quite a difficult task but I accomplished it after a lot of hard work. Damn, I have one real crazy imagination. Anyways back to the topic.

So this Sudanese girl who’s been living in Canada for a few years recently set up a Sudanese organization to promote friendship with Israel. In only a matter of days, she received calls from 20 Sudanese intellectuals who were eager to join her organization. The brave Sudanese girl who initiated this project is Taraji Mustafa. She’s a human rights activist whom frankly I’ve never heard of before. The article quotes many of the things she said to present her perspective. I agree with almost everything she had to say. Taraji argued that there was no strong reason for hate to exist amongst all Sudanese and all Israelis. She admitted that the Israeli government has committed many crimes but acknowledged the fact that there are many many Israelis especially on the Israeli left who want to live in peace with Muslims and Arabs. She went on to continue arguing that Jews are humans just like everybody else. She also brought up the issue of the Darfurian refugees who fled to Israel and talked about the Israeli lawyers who demanded that the Darfurians be given political asylum in Israel. She talked about her disgust towards the attitude Arab governments and organizations had when it came to the disaster happening in Darfur. She expressed her wish to travel to Israel to set up another branch of her organization there. Taraji also talked about the economic benefits that would take place if Israel and Sudan established formal political ties. The girl talked about many things and presented numerous points which I agree with 100% except for one dumb naive thing. Taraji said she was very optimistic that the Sudanes people would welcome establishing ties with Israel. LOL.

The comments that were posted on the article prove her so so dead wrong. Out of 50+ comments, only 3 supported the idea. The rest were mostly so disgustingly rude and posted comments full of passionate hate towards Taraji and Israel. They called her a dirty b*tch, a whore who had enough of Sudanese men and was looking for different action with Israeli men, lose pus*y, traitor and worst of all a mother f*cking Darfurian slave who should rot in Darfur. Usually the site moderates dirty comments but the ones on this article were left perfectly untouched. Some other anti-Taraji comments didn’t contain disgusting filth like the rest. A few commenters argued that she was sucking up to Jews in Canada because she’s a self-hating Sudanese who will do anything to get more accepted into Western society. I don’t think that’s true. In fact it’s very unfair to say that about her. I’m guessing after having lived in Canada for a few years, she started meeting and befriending Jews for the first time ever. That must have had a profound and mind-opening effect on her thinking.

All in all I generally agree with her points as many of them are very valid. Some are clearly not. Oh well… So much for dreams of peace. I don’t think I need to tell you about the anti-Israeli and super anti-Semetic comments there do I? I’ll leave it up to your imagination. Hey by the way did you know that up to 20,000 Sudanese live in Israel? Dear Israeli readers, if you know any of them please tell them I said hi! :)

Taraji,

I really enjoyed your interview which is shown right now at MEMRI TV web site. I completly agree with you. Your stand on the issue of Arab racism and supremacy in the media when it comes to the Sudanese people is the whole truth. The stereotypical images of Sudanese people is overwhelming in the Arab media. It is the prevalent in many walks of life. I support your association for friendship with Jewish/ Israeli intellectuals. Dont never back up from your stand on fighting the Arab/muslim supremacy and their twisted high level of self-righteousness and tyranical ideology.

You are a brave person. I will support your organization, but I am a former Moroccan, now American citizen and college professor.

All the best.

Dear Traji! wallahi, please send your email (I master Arabic)

Just a small remark: I was terrified to hear about this racism but it’s true.

The real fact of my life ( so that noone blames me that I say it because I ‘m israeli)

Several years ago i was at the University in france, in Besancon.
there was a group of Sudanese students and a group of Gulf students.

(and a group of Israeli students as well)

The Khaleejiyun talked sometimes with the Iraelis,
we Talked much with the Sudaneses students, but the Khalijioon have NEVER talked with the Sudanese!

Salaam Aleikum/Shalom Aleichem,

I am happy to see that people like Ms. Mustafa are willing to be brave in the face of oppressive Arab/Muslim governments. The Israeli government has many faults, but Israelis feel Middle Eastern and it is time they are treated like Middle Easterners. I applaud this program of Mustafas and hope similar ones pop up in every Arab/Muslim country.

Maasalama/Lehitraot,

Benny

I watched the interview of Ms. Traji on MEMRITV.COM with great interest. My great grandfather Isak El Eini was an Iraqi Jew who arrived in Omdurman with the Anglo Egyptian Army in 1898 and settled in the Sudan. He brought all his family over and by 1967 there were about 500 Jews living in the Sudan. After the 1967 war they were all expelled, their properties expropriated and their Sudanese citizenship revoked. My Sudanese cousins spoke very favorably about the Sudanese people.

Ms. Traji is a very courageous woman. Allah Wayaki.

Bravo Traji for this brave initiative. No one in this universe will deny what Jews and Israeli did for Darfur Since this genocide has started.Jews, and Israeli are the first in helping, supporting, funding and standing by the Darfurians, when our Muslim brothers and sisters and Arabs have ignored our cause. But most of them are supported the government of Sudan’the killers’ Instead of the Innocent armless victims of Darfur.Specially the Arabs Leaque has played a major role to support Al-bashir government and it’s Janjaweed allies. So why not if Darfurians appreciates the favors of those saved and still working tirelessly to save the lives of Darfur people.Long live for the real human beings for their good deeds, regardless their judisim, christianity, bodizuim, anemist or what so ever.Who is really deserves a friendship? The racists, haterd killers.Or those generous, kind, passionate savers?Very simple answer!!

Go forward Traji..we strongly support you.

Mohamed Yahya.

I don’t know if Taraji reads the comments in this column, but, I have to say, Taraji is a hero!

Ms. Mustafa doesn’t need my testament as to the validity of her stance, but I’m behind her 100%.

I’m eager to see more of Taraji in our local Canadian media as well as in the Arabic media. She speaks the ever so needed messsage of peace and friendship with fellow humans who happen in this to be Israeli.

I don’t know about the part about the stereotyping of Sudanese in the Arabic media. Speaking as an Arab-Sudanese, Arabs are unfortunately intrinsically racist. I personally thik it’s a lost cause but good for Ms. Mustafa for underlining it and pointing it out.

Go Taraji, you’re a credit to the Sudanse Canadian community and to Canadians as a whole.

A fellow Sudanese-Canadian and Ontarian,
Ammar
