Sudanese Military Command Angry With Jan Pronk & Want Him Deported (UPDATED)

The Sudanese military command is angry with Jan Pronk and is accusing him of committing an act of war against them.
A few days ago, Jan Pronk published a post on his blog speaking of heavy losses in the Sudanese Armed Forces’ side. The post gives a clear impression that the Darfur rebels are winning and inflicting heavy damage on the SAF.
First, the SAF has lost two major battles, last month in Umm Sidir and this week in Karakaya. The losses seem to have been very high. Reports speak about hundreds of casualties in each of the two battles, many wounded soldiers and many taken as prisoner. The morale in the Government army in North Darfur has gone down. Some generals have been sacked; soldiers have refused fighting.
The SAF command is accusing him of spreading propaganda that aids the rebels’ cause against them. They’ve declared him to be a danger to national security and are demanding that he gets deported. I doubt they’ll actually deport him and I think their words are mere empty threats. The UN’s mission in Sudan is huge and ranges from humanitarian work to peace keeping in the south. Somebody has to watch over all those things and this somebody is Jan Pronk.
UPDATE: Crap, I was wrong. These people have got to be kidding me. Who the hell is going to take over the UN operation in Sudan? Jan Pronk has been told to leave. He has 3 days to do so!

Why does the Sudanese govt. just looooove to exacerbate situations that are already pretty bad??
Rihab, the NCP at the moment is under a lot of pressure. If it crumbles, there is a lot to be lost. Many high officials could be arrested and tried in the International Criminal Court for their sick war crimes. Hence, the NCP is doing this to send out a strong message that it won’t tolerate any action against it.
You know what amazes me? That a group like these people are happily pushing around the major players in the international community like Britain & the US. If Bush and Blair can’t even make pressure on Sudan work to ease the Darfur situation, how the hell do they both want to fix Iraq? Sometimes I tend to think that the NCP is confident UK and US can’t do crap since they’ve already got enough on their hands ie. Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran.
The Southerns are really pissed off about this. People call the current Sudanese government, the national unity government. Ya, sure thing! As if the SPLM gets any say in things like this. Whenever the SPLM tries to say or do something that is against the wishes of the NCP, it gets threatened. National Unity Government or whatever crap people wish to call it, the show is clearly being run by Bashir’s NCP. Sigh!
The Sudanese want to play the tough guy. They were really hit hard by Jan Pronks presence in Khartoum. He gave them the reason to kick him out! But it is not going to help the situation at all.
There is no unity government in Khartoum, as far as I know. It is a show being run by Bashir and the NCP. I only hope they allow us to vote for our freedom in 2008! But now, not yet uhuru.
There’s no doubt that the NCP is under pressure and the international community should continue to pressure them and they should be tried in the ICC for the heinous crimes committed in Darfur, and all over Sudan for that matter. I mean, Sudan has had its share of screwed up governments but never in its history has it had one this brutal and this corrupt. Anyway, another thing that fuels the NCP’s arrogance is its belief that it’s almost immune from any direct UN interference given the strong economic relationship they have built with the Chinese but they forget that Sudan needs the Chinese more than the Chinese need them and I don’t see China jeopardising its relationship with the West for the sake of Sudan.
I’m not sure if the Southerners care much to be honest, Kiir hardly tries to pressure the NCP to fulfil its obligations towards the South let alone Darfur. I think all Kiir cares about is to see it to 2011 so they can separate from the North, and the way the NCP is acting - I really don’t blame them.
