I have a strange habit of loving any movie in which the hero dies in the end. Most epic movies and all stories set during the Great Depression are also very appealing to me. The struggle in them is so real and human. I hate most comic book movies. I find them silly and unrealistic. That means I’m not a fan of X-Men, Spider Man, Super Man, Fantastic 4 etc. I like movies that I can relate to or that inspire me. Other than that, the rest don’t really do it much for me unless you’re talking about comdey. American Pie or Rush Hour anyone?

I enjoyed virtually of those movies, but I have to pick out Gladiator, the first two Godfathers and Million Dollar Baby as my favorites on your list.
That’s a solid solid list Drima.
Special shout out for Braveheart, my all time favorite with Gladiator number two.
You forget to include Saving Private Ryan, Forest Gump and Tombstone
Pretty much love all on that list though.
oh I know you’re just dying to be the hero arn’t you?? hahah
You just admire martyr’s because they stand up for what they believe in. and you have principle tooo.
Love the list. But you’re missing DIE HARD! and Veronica Geurin! sigh. and tons more that I wont mention or I won’t be able to stop! hahah
mish you babe!
hugs
What? Where is “Unforgiven” or “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” with Clint Eastwood? No classic movies like “Casablanca” or “Doctor Strangelove” or “Citizen Kane?” How about “Pulp Fiction?” Not a fan of “South Park” or “Team America,” huh?
How about some 80’s movies like Ferris Bueller or “The Breakfast Club?”
Fascinating film nobody knows about: “Geronimo: An American Legend.”
Great (but perverse) British movie: “Trainspotting.” Also anything Monty Python. Gotta like “Spinal Tap.”
Another must see film: “The Color Purple.”
Tommy - The Life of Brian and Holy Grail are THE masterpieces of Monty Python. Absolute classics
Drima - for comic books, check out stuff like Sandman, Y:The Last Man, Watchmen, Transmetropolitan… I reckon you’ll especially dig the last one on the list
Grandpa Tommy & uncle Raccoon,
I was still a kid when many of those movies came out so either I didn’t watch them or I don’t remember them.
South Park & Breakfast Club are kool though… I’ll check out Transmetropolitan…
Oh shyte ya and PULP FICTION… Dat’s a must!
Hey, I’m serious about Tombstone, Drima. If you haven’t seen it I’m gonna fedex it to you!! Great flick. And tommy was right on with Ferris Beueller and Breakfast Club. Two absolute classics along with Tombstone.
I like City of Angels
Blood in - blood out
American history X
Five in the afternoon
but mostly, I can’t remember titles of movies and remember I’ve seen one already when I’m like 5 minutes watching it again
Tse.
Oh… and what about Sin City, young man
?
What is your opinion of the movie “Unbreakable”?
Technically, it’s also a “comic book movie,” and I defend it to be the best if not The Definitive “comic book movie,” even though it’s not actually based upon a comic book itself.
I wasn’t around when Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove, or Citizen Kane came out. Not by a long shot.
Still, you gotta dig, man! Dig!
Unforgiven is a fairly recent movie. It came out in the early 90’s. I don’t like many western movies (except for a few Clint Eastwood films), but I make an exception for that movie. It is far and away the most gritty, realistic, western ever produced.
A really strange movie that I like: the Japanese film, based off the Abe Kobo novel, “Woman in the Dunes.”
I even like a few silent films. I have a copy of “Nosferatu” and a copy of “The Blue Mountain.” Shame that Riefenstahl, the star of “The Blue Mountain,” was a fuckin’ Nazi propagandist in her later career.
Have you ever seen “Training Day” or “Se7en?” Both are recent films and both are worth watching. I thought “American History X” was an interesting 90’s film. Edward Norton is a bit of a kook in real life, but I like his acting. “The Green Mile” is another awesome film. “Dead Man Walking” is a good one. “Office Space” is great. “Saving Private Ryan” is good. I like “Black Hawk Down” too. Kevin Costner is good in “Dances with Wolves” (the cinematography in that film is phenomenal) and even better in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” “Jacob’s Ladder” is a great film from the 90’s.
“Natural Born Killers” is one you’ll either love or hate. I like it, but it took me a few views to really get into it.
Great horror films: “The Exorcist,” (the Director’s Cut version is particularly good), ” “The Poltergeist” films (at least the first two), and “The Shining.” I liked “The Ring,” but I thought “The Ring 2″ sucked. Most other people, for some odd reason, have the opposite opinion: they like “The Ring 2″ better.
A horror film people either love or hate would be the “Candyman.”
An old one, not particular scary, but interesting anyway, and a trendsetter in the genre, is Roman Polanski’s “Rosemary’s Baby.”
At least, you’ve got “The Godfather” trilogy in there. Those are truly marvelous films. Or as they say in Hollywood, Mahhhhvalous! Brando is fantastic in just about anything. I must say, however, that between the big three films concerning Vietnam, “Apocalypse Now” is my least favorite. “Platoon” is a must see and the best of the three, IMO. “Full Metal Jacket” is good also.
Worst film ever according to some critics:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052077/
So cheesy that it has become a cult classic. Another awful film, a silent one, is the cult classical piece of anti-marijuana propaganda , “Reefer Madness.”
Two goofy satires I like are “National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1″ (a spoof of the Lethal Weapon movies and others in that genre), and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.”
For you Gladiator fans:

Oh yes yes how could I 4get them, American History X & Training Day are da shyte too.
is Unbreakable da one with Bruce Willis & Samuel L Jackson?
Egypeter I dunno Tombstone but I’ll check it out. How’s Chicago by the way mr. Real Estate agent? Ah how I miss the big lake and the weather… weather during start of summer that is and NOT at the end… Dude, do me a favour go eat for me in Olive Garden & Kabul House will you?? I so miss the food there… Especially Kabul House… I’m serious ya Egypeter walahi bigad… You’ll love the food especially the minto
http://www.kabulhouse.com/
Tommy, again I have no idea about most of the movies you named but Saving Ryan’s Privates??
For horror movie, the one and only Child Play… Hi, I’m Chucky. Wanna play? I love it people… I used to get nightmares about it when I was 6 or 7. Oh mighty Dembala Muahhaahhahahahaha… Ey what about Final Destiniation 2?? Or the Chainsaw Massacre?? Aaaaah screw it…
American Pie people. Every patriotic American should love it otherwise you ain’t patriotic.
Geee how I miss my high school days. They were da shyte… Strip poker anyone?? Sigh!
How about “Goodfellas” or “Casino?” Both are mafia movies based on true stories. Both are great, but “Goodfellas” is a must and is one of my all-time favorite movies. In fact, these are two of the few non-Godfather mob movies worth watching. “Donnie Brasco” with Johnny Depp would be another one of those few.
“Raging Bull” with DeNiro is another great movie. “Taxi Driver” is a good movie, a classic, actually.
All right! That is all I’m going to suggest for now. Check some of the movies out. Get your Hollywood education, Drima. Three that I think you’ll like for sure: “Goodfellas,” “The Exorcist,” “Trainspotting.” None of them are that old. “The Exorcist” is the oldest, made in the 70’s. “Goodfellas” is from the 80’s, and “Trainspotting” is from the 90’s. Give “Unforgiven” a shot one these days, too.
Correct, “Unbreakable” is the Bruce Willis- and Samuel L. Jackson-starring M. Night Shyamalan film.
I’d take the time to go into a huge list of other recommendations for movies, but I’lll wait until that subject specifically is asked of your readership. I’m just curious about your (and others’) take on “Unbreakable” based upon your predisposition against comic book movies.
Troy Z, Unbreakable was a good movie. It wasn’t bad. The thing however is that I don’t really get so excited over comic book movies. For instance, the maximum number of times I’m actually willing to watch movies like Super Man (which I didn’t watch) or Spider Man etc is once and only once. I feel no inclination to watch them again another time. I don’t know bro but that’s just my honest opinion. I don’t really find comic based movies exciting and super enjoyable like many of my friends do. They’re too dry in my opinion…
But ya dude… On another note… If the Show Prison Break is based on a comic as rumour has it, I’ll change my mind all together.
Drima -
I dare you to tell me you didn’t like Sin City or V For Vendetta… even if the latter was a brutal lefty rape of Morrison’s work.
Oh, and you did like The Matrix, which was ripped off from The Invisibles (also Morrison).
Dude, comic books are not all… comic books. Thing’ve moved since the Silver Age of comics, will superheroes in tights and capes. Me and another guy are doing one about Persian mythology, and hopefully will soon make one about South Lebanon in 1999 (we both served there). Here’s to hoping they’ll make it big
V for Vendetta sucks.
Natalie Portman is a beautiful and very intelligent woman. She is a crummy actress, unfortunately. No screen charisma. None at all.
