Jodetoad is basically right. There are some unmentioned problems exacerbating the issue even further (loss of reform mechanisms in Islam and greater inherent violence in Islam, for instance)… but basically that’s it.

The last paragraph, I believe, demands elaboration. This is not a question of global overpopulation. Not all populations are overbreeding - Europe’s native population is steadily declining. And populations generally boom in the most problematic of places, creating ever-greater disparities in wealth and culture. And yet, as the example of India shows, this is not an insoluble or inevitable problem; it’s a combination of culture, religion, population size, population composition, tradition, availiable and acceptable sources of income, education and a slew of other factors that create a virtually insoluble problem.
