Introducing the Giant of Sudanese Music

Mohammad Wardi, is undoubtly one of the best Sudanese singers of all time. The man is a singing machine but only after consuming more than 2 liters of whiskey. I love his songs. His lyrics and melodies are so powerful and as Sudanese as “Sudanism” can get.

Check out this live accoustic performance by him. It’s very traditional. The song speaks about a man who had to leave Sudan and the love of his life behind when things got too harsh. It’s sort of a conversation between him and the girl he misses. Enjoy it.

Very cool…so expressive, you know? I really like watching the interaction that goes on between the instrumentalist and the vocalist. That’s really neat.

    WOW! That’s cool.
Although, of course - I didn’t understand one word of it - the melody is simply beautiful and sweet… so relaxed.
    Tse.

    Drima -
I very much enjoyed this exposure to Sudanese popular music. The informal, relaxed and emotional connection to the song he was singing was different from most song stylists in the West. It was almost like he was having a conversation. Truly a pleasure. Please continue to share them with us!
BTW, how is your own band doing? Have you got a spot on MySpace yet? I have two college-age sons who feature their band on their site there.

That was coool man! I am mixed too and was picked as a kid in school just because I was different. It seems that my two nationalities have such a loathing for each other that I let the comments affect me. I am over it now as a young adult.

Good people are good because they are good, not because of where they came from or what they look like. Same with bad people.

[…] I know.. finally right? My first official podcast is finally up. Sorry it took so damn long. My computer is still messed up so I used my brother’s computer instead to make it. I didn’t get the podcast to sound like how I wanted it to but I think posting it now is better than me postponing it again just so I could make it better. Anyways here it is. I sampled the music from my most favourite Sudanese song of all time, Wardi’s Ya Baladi Ya 7abob. Here’s the first run of “The Drima Show”. It’s nothing serious, really. Just me talking crap and trying to get used to this podcasting thingy. But on the other hand, if people in power actually bothered implementing my plan, the world WILL become a much better place. Believe me it will. Enjoy! […]
