LOL Well done, Drima!!
Who’d have thought sex would be hotter than politics or religion??
Not sure whether your conclusion is absolutely watertight, though. It is not a given that all atheists support (or even admit to the existence of) homosexuality, and it is not a given that all religious people are the opposite - I, for one, know a fair number of religious Jewish gays, and their parents who accept them for what they are.
Equally, I think that the condemnation of FGM was almost universal in your comments section, with many people who struck me as being quite religious standing up against it (People! The world needs to hear you on this!).
And finally, though I was not offended by it one bit, I don’t think that it is correct to say that if someone is an atheist, he has no conscience. You implied something like that in your final comment down below. I’d invite you to look at that point again and to consider the thesis (just to consider it, not to necessarily adopt it) that it is possible to arrive at morality and human conscience even without god. Of course, that requires an acceptance that morality is flexible rather than rigid, and that may be a logical leap you cannot make, but I for one do not see any evidence that only religious people are moral (in fact, unfortunately, mostly what I see is the exact opposite).
Loving your blog immensely. Never thought I’d have the opportunity of even having a conversation with someone from so different a background to mine let alone discussing these sorts of things
And all that because you thought my frangipani was a marijuana plant
LOL
NC, thanx for ur words. I didn’t mean to offend about the conscience part. It’s just hard for me to understand how atheists can deny existence of the soul. To me, soul=conscience… My statement might have been too sweeping I guess. I never thought you would react to it that way.
I’ve known and I’m still in contact with 2 good friends who are atheists. One is a Spanish dude and the other is a Russian. The Russian guy was very liberal about things like sex and drugs.
I remember on Fridays he used to want to go play pool after school and I’ll tell him that I have to go for prayers first. He’ll be like “dude why do u keep praying, it’s not like there’s someone listening you know”. We would argue and eventually we’ll just forget about it. We had a lot of intense and angry arguments about so many things. I mean the guy in terms of beliefs and principles is my total opposite yet we are still good friends. However one thing that always stood out is the fact that during really bad stressfull times he’ll start asking me and wondering if there really is a Higher Power. He would even believe in it for a while but then snap back to his old self after his problems are settled…
He defintely did have a conscience. In fact when compared to many of the other Muslim guys I knew in school, he was a much better and more loyal friend. It was really such experiences that helped me expand my knowledge. We both learnt a lot from each other and even though we’re different we’re still good friends. Hell before meeting up, he’ll roll up a joint and get stoned. Me on the other hand will go to the mosque and pray. After that we’ll meet up. It’s so hilarious when I think about it and it makes me wonder why we all just can’t get along and coexist like that?
Sorry for the long rant NC. I guess what I’m trying to say is how can u be so sure there’s no Higher Power and how do you deal with the idea of death? What’s conscience if it’s not related to the soul.
Food and sex post will do it
There is a major problem with conscience nowadays. Conscience is not “soul” - it’s a function of your Super-Ego, playing a vital role in your survival. It is constructed as a reaction to the society and the perceived ethics and morals of that society. I strongly suggest reading Freud’s works on it - he is surprisingly readable
Why do you think that Islamofascists can saw off an innocent person’s head and feel no guilt? Why do you think they can send a child to commit suicide while killing random innocents and sleep soundly in the night afterwards?
Because their notion of ethics and morality is unrelated to reality: it is based on interpretations of an irrelevant text. Techinically, they are sociopaths - people with severely damaged personalities, whose conscience is detatched from reality. They would feel that they are doing more wrong when they fail to wash their hands before prayer than when they kill. Why, do you think, that it is so? Why do you think that you find FGM immoral and it bothers your conscience while many of your contrymen feel completely different on the issue?
No, my friend, soul has nothing to do with it. Your cognitive and observation abilities enabled you to develop a healthy Super-Ego, and a healthy conscience as a part of it.
About death - we just die. Cease to be. And here enters a question of what, exactly, is “you”
You hit the nail on the head with the death question - religion is most often the reaction exactly to that. Humans are foolish herd animals - they need to believe there is a higher purpose, that there is a meaning to their pathetic existence. And they need someone to lead them.
Enter divinity: the absolute Father figure (or Mother figure in some cases). Suddenly, there is no need to find purpose; there is no need to ponder your existence; there is no need to do anything but obey; there is no more responsibility for your existence. How comfortable. And that scary thing - non-being - is suddenly irrelevant, because the ultimate Father can save you from it. As you can guess, I find it childish and irresponsible

Hmmmm. I am not dissing any particular religion, BTW - I am equally dismissive of all of them. Eris gives me no end of shit because of it
Drima, no offense taken at all.
Um, and what Raccoon said.
And adding to that, I don’t think that a prerequisite for having a conscience is belief in an eternal soul (which is what I think you mean by ’soul’, correct me if I’m wrong). And therefore, I don’t think that being a moral person is dependent upon belief in the existence of a god.
How can I be sure there’s no higher power? That demands a longer, more detailed answer than my rumbling stomach is prepared to allow me to indulge in right now. But I promise to discuss that with you too

Bigotry and Ignorance of Islam
A MUST READ
http://www.antiwar.com/reese/?articleid=8494
Shockingly accurate, and this is coming from an American, WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO?!
Raccoon:
~~~~~Your cognitive and observation abilities enabled you to develop……~~~~
………moral values. NOT: conscience. Conscience is something else all together. The conscience of each and every man plays a unique role WITHIN the set of moral values -in his world - through his perspective- your abovementioned abilities has led him. You take beheading as an example, but what about simple criminals living within your society, under your set of moral values? They betray their conscience. They blemish their souls.
Drima:
I believe in God. But, my believe in Him can’t be explained - I can only feel it, and I feel it very, very strong.
Obviously, when you believe, following your conscience instead of your instincts (that might lead you into temptation) is part of “the Test”
so, I think -in the end- it’s more selfish of us sticking to a clear conscience as we understand it, because we hope to be rewarded for it, then it is for atheists…
Tse.
But you are rewarded by God, were as some atheists only want recognition from their fellow man. Have you known any to keep their philanthropist deeds to themselves, we only know of them as being morally equip because they keep telling us. But there are probably some among them who truly want it for themselves and not to be praised by others.
Tsedek - I disagree. Moral values are a societal construct; conscience is an individual one. A person can easily live with and accept a certain package of moral values and have no conscience (another example of a sociopath). But hey, this is semantics, innit?
1. Anal sex is routine in the animal kingdom. Anyone with a dog would know. My (male) dog gets humped on a regular basis. Monkeys do it too. Homo Sapience has always done it.
Conclusion: Darwin can’t be blamed for anal sex or attitudes to it.
2. Which team Muslims would be on with regards to threesomes if it was to be practiced within marriage?
The raccoon seems to have been reading a lot of: Henry Miller, Nietsche, Kazantzakis, Sartre, Genet, Marx, Ayn Rand and such! He has bundled all their mumbo-jumbo together and come up with what: NOTHING! EMPTINESS!
You have to try better than that! Come up with some originality for your argumeents and ‘reasonings’ which you consider ‘logic’! Instead of giving us the same old shit! Old shit that goes on and on around in circles!
‘Logic’! LOL! Such Kafkesque ideas have all failed and been buried! Raccoon: if you have some original ideas on our existence say so! Or dont bore US with this same old shit! If you are a college or high school teacher then try dishing such obsolete ideas to them! They might find you wow!
Try some thing else interesting and original! If you want to win converts! And respect!
Awwww, thanks, Anonymous, love. You forgot to mention Lao Tze, Upanishadas, Vedas, Tantric texts, Confucius and Buddhist compilations.
Nothingness - and even better, emptiness - are Dao, the Way. You honor me by saying that I have reached an understanding of Dao… but alas, I do not reside in perpetual Mu. Although me and Mara Shakti are on pretty good terms, so I must be on the right way. Or Way.
And you seem to be misunderstanding my intentions… I, frankly, don’t care too much about respect and have no intention of “winning” converts (to what? Discordianism? Perish the thought! Eris is mine, all MINE!)
And once again, thank you. I’d give you a hug and a big sloppy kiss, but I just ate some fish I found in the garbage, so I recon you won’t like that.
Peace out
The raccoon - BTW it’s your kind of Niestchesque, Kafkesque, Marxist ‘logic’ (that is what you have bundled together) that nearly drove the Red Indians and Aborigines in to extinction and is the main cause for their present pathetic, miserable conditions! It is your ‘logic’ that enslaved millions of Africans who still live in deplorable conditions even and more so in Washington DC!
it is your kind of ‘logic’ that came up bothe the first and second World Wars! How many perished there? It is your kind of ‘logic’ that made Hitler and his ‘logic’! And the USSR and Stalin with their ‘logic’! Where is the USSR now? And it is your kind of logic that empowered the KU Klux Klan!
‘Logic’! Your kind of ‘logic’ has caused and is still causing millions to suffer and persish!
The Raccoon - you may fool others bout not me! You are too far away from Lao or Confuscious or Budha! You are closer to Marx, Nietsche, Kafka and Satre! And you are trying to win converts and an audience! But as I said, your kind of ‘logic’ has failed humanity!
Try some thing else! Something less destructive! You might win an audience!
Anonymous - ah, it is so good to be understood by a complete stranger. You must be the greatest psychoanalyst to ever grace humankind.
It is also good to know that I am, apparently, responsible for all the major problems of the 19th and 20th centuries. Would you care to elaborate on how that came to pass?
Wow! So many exclamation marks! You must be right! I’m converted!
(NOT!)
Believe what you like, but please, don’t shout. It only devalues whatever point you might be trying to make. The full stop (period) is at the bottom right hand corner of the keyboard. Continuous use of the exclamation mark (or of capital letters) only shows me that you’re terribly angry. Points made in anger will always be taken with a very large pinch of salt by me.
Personally, I’m not going to even think of responding to you, Anonymous, until you calm down and write in a civil manner.
Ha! Ha! Ha! Got you guys! I touched very raw nerves! Now who is really angry? Talk about civility!
Raccoon - unless you have been living for centuries, you could not have been the one to ‘for all the major problems of the 19th and 20th centuries’!
Nominally challllenged!!!! I dont want you to respond! I want you to think! And come to Washinton DC! And the Bronx! And see what you have done to our land! You stole it! Raped it! And still rape it!
Nietcshe! Kazantzakis! Kafka! Sartre! ‘Logic’! SHIT! We didn’t have those! But we never plundred or stole from any body! And we diddn’t annihilate!
Ooops. I fed the troll … and now she’s on a rampage …
Trolls can be occasionally fun.
Anonymous - well, it your your claim that I am responsible for all the major problems of the 19th and 20th centuries. I would like that explained, please.
Also, please don’t forget to take your medications.
Nominnnaaallly challllenged!!! U R responding!!! Hah! Hah! Hah! Lies!! Lies!!! U cant keep your word!!! The sissy cant!!!
The troll eh? Jean Genet liked anal sex!!! Socrates liked anal sex!!! Nom nom unchalllenged likes anal sex!!! Who is the troll???!!!! ‘Logic’!! Sodomy!!! SHIT!!!
Raccoon, do you also liiike anal???!! U R all sodomites with ‘logic’! SHIT!
That’s all 4 today folks!!! CiaO!!!!
Anonymous, I really don’t appreciate the fact that you’re infesting my blog with such comments. Please, if you have proper points to put up or anything to say, do it in a civil manner. Practice some mutual respect if you could. Commenting the way you do only makes you look childish.
That will be all for today. I hope you consider what I say and take it into consideration.
“The sissy cant!!!”
Is it weird that I kept reading this as “sissy cunt,” and then “sissy Kant”, as in Immanuel Kant? Especially after anonymous named other famous thinkers. Thanks for pointing out that Socrates liked anal sex. Now his work will conjure up images of butts floating around, making it harder for me to take him seriously.
Sex on the internet will always be better than politics, hence why over 70% of the internet’s bandwidth is used to transfer pornography. I hear the porn industry also produces about 7,000 or so porn films a year, which makes it seem like 90% of the world’s population conists of porn stars and porn fans.
Yaay! My first post with 35+ comments. I need to think of other topics hotter than anal sex and femle genital mutilation now. Hmmm…
You’re beginning to sound like a producer of American schlock TV shows!
LOL =)
