See, You Did Lose

by Drima on August 15, 2006

Yup Israel you did lose the battle. Hezbollah won’t disarm simply because the Lebanese government won’t disarm them. Moreover the UN resolution contains nothing about forcing Hezbollah to disarm. The 2 soldiers haven’t been given back yet but there are reports of an exchange being discussed. The IDF is withdrawing its troops. A million civilians had to live in uncomfortable underground bomb shelters for a whole month. Oh ya and let me again say Hezbollah won’t disarm.
Olmert didn’t do what he said he was set out to do, so based on that I consider this as a loss. Round one is over. Round two should be just around the corner. A lot depends on the international peace keeping force and what it does. Oh ya and depends on one more thing too, Iran!

“Haaretz said Israel would negotiate the release of the troops and that in exchange Israel would be ready to free several Lebanese prisoners and about 20 other Hizbollah men it has captured during its current offensive in Lebanon.”

Why didn’t Israel do this in the first place & avoid a bloody war???

Moreover, if Israel does actually exchange prisoners:

1- Hezbollah would have achieved its objective & be then undoubetdly be considered the victors.

2- Israel will be further frowned upon for waging an unnecessary war when it could have resolved this issue peacefully from the start.

The whole talk of this war changed as it progessed. First it was about, getting back the 2 soldiers. Then it became about weakening Hezbollah which might have happened. After that it became about getting Hebollah to disarm which won’t seem to happen.

So yes where’s the victory? Do you base it on Lebanon’s death toll and destruction? If yes then no duh Israel won and it only got scratched but that’s not what I base it on. It’s all about Hezbollah. They live on and they’ll be replenished again in due time unless the international peace keeping force changes that. However for now they’re still alive and kicking. Moreover their propaganda machine is still working.

Hi Drima, actually UN Resolution 1701 does require Hezbollah to disarm. It requires, “Full implementation of the relevant provisions of the Taif Accords, and of resolutions 1559 (2004) and 1680 (2006), that require the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, so that, pursuant to the Lebanese cabinet decision of July 27, 2006, there will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese state.”

Hipster, Hezbollah crossed an international line, kidnapped soldiers, killed others, and opened fire with rockets and mortar bombs on Israeli towns, all of which were unprovoked and thoroughly criminal.

I have no doubt you wanted this bloody war to be avoided — I did too — so let me ask you … why didn’t people like you come out immediately and protest against Hezbollah’s illegal maneuvers, demanding they release the soldiers unconditionally? I only hear you say that Israel should capitulate to criminality but I wish you would talk about how much more important it is for Arabs to protest against it.

We — all of us together — must be motivated not only to avoid war, but also to enhance the region strategically. We all must do our share to cultivate an atmosphere of peace and law-and-order, so that rivalry between groups will be based upon ideas rather than upon ethnicity and religion. We live together, we must evolve socially together. This cannot possibly happen until we agree, across the board, that we will not support the use of kidnappings and criminality as political tools. Thanks.

Peacefulvanguard,

Thanks for the clarification. Your second comment is the best I’ve read all day. I guess you and I share the same ideals. You have my respect.

Cheers.

Drima, everybody lost in this. I don’t think you can say either side won when so many lives have been lost.
And neither have acheived their true objectives… apart from killing each other.

Peacefulvanguard, I didn’t protest against the kidnappings because I believe Israel has committed much worse atrocities especially in Palestine.Israel is mourning the abduction of 2 soldiers when thousands(500,000 when I last heard it on the Jazeera news)of innocent Lebanese/Palestinian & Sudanese prisoners in its jails.Even more irrational is how it reacted to the whole situation.
I believe Hamas, Hezbollah & Al Qaida, though I don’t approve of suicide bombings, are a reaction of the West’s meddling in our region,Israel’s occupation & the Arab’s leaders own hidden agendas.

I found this link in Drima’s archive pertaining to Israel’s violations & the UN’s resolutions against them:

I,too, hope for a peaceful Middle East but as you stated, it will require a collective effort from all parties.
Thankx for your comments.
