When Will This “Pride” Stop?

I just saw this comment which was left by a reader on Sandmonkey’s blog. I simply had to post it here.

When will the Arab-Muslim world stop getting its “pride” from fighting Israel and start getting it from constructing a society that others would envy, an economy others would respect, and inventions and medical breakthroughs from which others would benefit?

The above is so very true. It’s one of the main things my political beliefs are based on and why I’m against the non-constructive attitude of venting out anger at USA and Israel. Contrary to belief in the Arab street, I don’t think there’s “pride” in what Hezbollah has been doing. So many Arab-Muslims are cheering Hezbollah for standing up to Israel. To them Hezbollah is giving us “pride” by standing up to the Zionist enemy even when faced with high tech weapons. Sigh, “Pride” my foot! Our own countries are so screwed and yet we still have time to be “proud”. Until the day I die, I’ll always believe that “the pen is mightier than the sword”. Education and science all the way baby. Down with ignorance and oppression.

Drima, I appreciate your comments, you seem to be a very mature young man.

Looking at your comments, and those of others in the region, it seems as though all that is required to rally people around is a few comments about a couple key subjects. People then leap to respond, as though they had push-buttons.

It almost looks like a soap opera, or fans at some sporting event, where there are clear lines between “right” and “wrong”, “our team” and “their team”.

Can it really be true that people are so easy to manipulate?

I don’t know but I heard a lot about the Israeli “deterrence” that would have been lost and therefore this war was (also) necessary. It smells to me that that also has a blend of “pride” in it - except of course for the security aspect of it that it might keep enemies away….

    Tse.

It’s sad that ppl get so worked up on war and killing the joos when they could be doing the same for - like you say - education and science. I see it here where I’m living and it all makes me sick. There are so many things that need to be tackled in this part of the world but instead they go out and celebrate and riot against the U.S., and then cheer for Hezbollah. The celebrate what is happening and taking revenge and it fills them w/ pride.

    Jodetoad -

Humans are even dumber than that. For some obscure reason, independent thinking seems to be inimical to human nature. Which is why the majority of humans are likely to die horribly in the near future - seeing as those the humans follow are traditionally insane, belligerent egomaniacs. And now they have WMDs… poof!

    “as though they had push-buttons.”

Jodetoad, you described it perfectly. We are very hot-tempered people in general and all it requires to stir us up is a few comments about some super sensitive issues. Bashir has been using it to his advantage recently and it has been working very well… I myself heavily dislike Israel’s campaign and I think it should tone it down already. ENOUGH! However after this is all done, our attitude will remain the same ie. more anger and hatred for Israel and the cycle of violence will continue… I wish our frustrations will be put to better use on something constructive…
