Bashir: Darfur Would Be UN Troops’ Graveyard

So the opposition naturally still continues. Bashir’s regime strongly believes there’s a conspiracy to get rid of him and so he won’t risk anything threatening his power. He also mentioned 2 interesting things.

“If they [UN] really want to protect the people of Darfur, what are they doing about the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and Palestine and the killing of women, children and innocents there?”

Bashir cited Iraq, where despite the presence of foreign forces there is “destruction, damage and sedition between the Sunnis and Shiites instigated by Western intelligence, in addition to the torture and killing of inmates in Abu Ghraib and other prisons.”

He’s cleverly rallying more opposition to UN troops by playin the Israel card as usual. Sigh! If the UN wants to freaking help then they should just reinforce the AU troops. Why is it so difficult for them to understand that? Maybe they really do envision a long term solution ie. getting rid of Bashir.

I don’t think the UN envisions doing anything at all about Darfur.

China will always cast the veto on that.

By the way, Drima, blogging about the massive Chinese investments in Sudan would be most welcome. We in the west know very little about how this really manifests itself. Is the Chinese presence very obvious? Or is it so subtle that most Sudanese are not even aware of how much they owe to their Chinese partners?

Dude, about 10 years ago when people see a Chinese guy walking the streets of Khartoum they all exclaim waaa Bruce Lee look look Bruce Lee… It was a weird sight. Now anywhere and everywhere you go there are Chinese people especially in Khartoum. They’re as obvious as the sun shining on a non-cloudy day… There are also many westerners there. Many Westerners also come to stay in Khartoum with their families. Khartoum is not a bad place. There are international schools and all… If you have money you can live like a king. I swear there are some houses you go into in Khartoum, that make it seem as if you’re in Beverly Hills. They’re HUGE and luxurious. Most of the Westerners who come are Dutch, Germans and French. There are few Americans and British dudes. Sudanese people are more trusting of the Chinese for apparent reasons.
