When Culture Or the Lack of it Gets You Into Trouble

by Drima on July 20, 2006

A Sudanese who is a friend of a friend recently moved to America after receiving his Green Card. After arriving and staying for a while in the country, this guy whom we shall all call Abbas took up a part-time job as an ice-cream man. While working, Abbas would drive his van around neighbourhoods selling all the ice-cream he can. One day while bored, resting and waiting for a customer, he got startled with a loud bang. When he looked out of the window, he realized it was a little girl who accidently hit Abbas’s parked van with her bicycle. Abbas yelled at her. She started crying. He got out of the van with great regret and tried to calm her down. The only problem is that he tried calming her Sudanese style. Abbas wiped the scared little girl’s tears, hugged her, swayed her gently from side to side and started tickling her to make her laugh. From a distance away the little girl’s mother witnessed the “disturbing scene”. She immediately called 911 since an evil black man was sexually molesting her little baby daughter. Abbas is now in jail. Sigh! He only had the best intentions.

Sad story, happens a lot when cultures meet.

I used to teach music to teenagers. I remember an ME kid I was scolding for teasing some girls. When I raised my voice to him, he looked down and away. It really pissed me off, as I thought he wasn’t paying attention to me.

Only later did I learn that was the Arab way of respecting my age and authority.

Sexual abuse is serious stuff in the U.S. And sadly enough, tickling can be considered abuse….

Hopefully this guy will get a fair trial and get out of jail… and hopefully this won’t affect his green card status.
