When the Koreans Appeared, the Dogs Disappeared

Ten years ago, you would hardly see any foreigner walking the streets of Khartoum except for the few and random UN officials roaming nearby their headquarters. Now however it’s not a strange thing seeing so many Westerners and Asians walking everywhere. I was even surprised last year to see many Westerners eating at Sudanese restaurants and enjoying Sudanese food. What was even more amazing were the Chinese dudes I met who spoke Arabic in perfect Sudanese dialect, you would swear they were probably Sudanese. Anyways, apparently however the Sudanese people really like Koreans. Before the Koreans came to Sudan there were so many stray dogs everywhere and it was an annoying problem. However when the Koreans started arriving, the number of stray dogs started decreasing dramatically.
Here’s a little story. I was with my uncle once as he was driving and then suddenly a Hyundai car in front of us pulled over to the right side of the road. Four Asian dudes jumped out and ran after a nearby dog. They caught it quickly and put it in the car’s trunk. At that moment my uncle yelled “God bless the Koreans!” I asked why and he replied “because they’re ridding us of stray dogs”. Believe it or not dog meat is a very famous delicacy in Korea and many Koreans love eating it. I had a few South Korean friends here in Malaysia who ate it whenever they had the chance to. Yummy right?

Yummy ?? hehehehhehehe
Nice posts
Is that hygienical? I mean can’t they get sick eating stray dogs who I think can be sick themselves?
Tse.
You would think so wouldn’t you Tse? I don’t think most strays are sick though, just malnourished and under cared for.
We had the same ‘phenomenon’ in Jamaica when Koreans starting immigrating to work in the Free-Zone and garment factories. It never got to the extent where there were no strays around, but in some areas there was a noticeable decline.
Drewcatt man, are you really from Jamaica? It’s been my dream ever since I was about 9 years old and my uncle send me this picture postcard from Montego Bay to go to Jamaica (I came to Israel instead, hahaah)
The picture that flashed up b4 my eye with this story is that of the Xterminators (movie)
Hopefully they don’t let those dogs suffer too much while preparing their favorite meal
Tse.
” Is that hygienical?”
Tsedek, I don’t really think people care about the quality of something especially when they are so deprived of it. LOL
It’s pretty gross la… But i guess we only think that because to us, a dog is a domestic pet…
The French eat snails and the Chinese eat live Monkey’s brains; we may find it starnge, but to them it’s normal.
We eat Lamb’s balls, kidneys, intestines, brains, hearts…..
I was at a barbeque in Jebel Aulia and these Chinese guys asked to borrow our grill, after about 5 minute my friend goes rushing over to make sure they weren’t cooking dogs on it. It gets u thinking though about what people eat. I guess its whatever people are used to eating. In the U.K and Ireland they eat black pudding which is dried pigs blood and fat, dog s don’t seem so bad after reading that do they? Hehe not that I’d eat dogs anyway
“dried pigs blood and fat”
OMG!!! *eye-as-saucers*
Tse.
Black pudding is called Morcilla in Argentina. I love it!
You ask for one morcilla and one chorizo for starters. Then the meat arrives…hmmmm!
Tse, yes I am Jamaican, born and raised.
And since we’re making confessions, we eat cow feet.
Hey Drewcatt, in Israel we eat the intestines of cows
It’s a Jewish/Iraqi dish called patscha LOL
Tse.
Leilouta we eat the same things in Sudan too.
In Sudan we also eat mixed RAW pieces of sheep’s heart, lungs, stomach with drops from the bile, some peanut butter, chilli powder, fresh onions and lemons… Yummy for most Sudanese but yucky for me… =p
The drops from the bile react with the pieces of meat because it has always been thought to be healthier. Recent research showed that drops of the bile neutralize some of the cholestrol content of the meal and decrease it.
If any of you want to try eating it if you go to Sudan then remember the name (Maraa Rah)…
Another cool thing in Kenya is bull’s blood mixed with honey…
Drima, that sounds gross.
And I used to like Black Pudding till I found out what was in it. yuck. but then, if only everyone thought about what was in generic chicken pies. or McD’s nuggets/burgers at that…. My Mum worked in a meat factory as a teen and you NEVER want to hear what goes into processed meat.
We eat goat/lamb brain in Algeria. We eat the eyes as well.
I have had dog at Korean resuraunts before, it is not bad at all. If you get the chance I recomend it.
There are tons of Asians in Algeria now too. There are several thousand Chinese workers and engineers, and there are Koreans as well. There are Chinese resuraunts all over the place nowadays. I don’t think I’ve been to a country yet where I did not see a Chinese food place at least once. That goes for Fiji even.
Nouri
Confession round ….cool
up here in Dk we eat raw herring (fish) soaked in vinegar: viking sushi.
And Drewcatt: yu eva nyam tun cornmeal ?
