Congress Members Willingly Arrested & Surprise, the Jews Are Kind!

I came across a nice headline which I thought I read wrongly at first. Apparently some US Congress members demonstrated infront of the Sudanese Embassy at DC, an act that got them arrested. This is so touching lol. I mean these guys were volunatarily arrested just so they could voice out their concerns over Darfur. One word… RESPECT! However they still insist on something that I disagree with at least for now.

“The protesters called on the Sudanese government to accept a U.N. peacekeeping force in Darfur and allow humanitarian relief organizations full access to victims.”

Folks believe me, the best solution right now would be to fund the AU and back them up rather than sending NATO or UN troops to Darfur.

A cool website I also found regarding Darfur was this. It’s about an American Jewish Organization and its support for the Darfur issue. Yes my dear Darfurians, the Jews do actualy have a heart that cares for you.

(To my American readers who live in DC, there will be a rally this 30th April. Check out www.savedarfur.org to get more info. I would love to join you but I am stuck in Malaysia)

UPDATE: My comments about Jews were aimed at those Muslims who tend to think that the Jews simply don’t care for what happens to Muslim populations.

    Dear Thinker,
I am new to your blog so I do not know if you are being serious or sarcastic, and if so to whom it is aimed. I am an American Jew, one of many who cares about the genocide in Darfur. And it is racist genocide, based on my knowledge that the perpetrators are Muslim and the murdered are Muslim too, just black.

We in the Jewish comunity are sensitive to genocide, having been victims of it. My wife works for a local branch of a Jewish organization. They are very involved in publicizing the genocide, trying to get our president to do more against it. Many many Jewish organizations, synagogues and other groups will be in Washington, D.C. to protest the genocide occurring. It is about values and the importance of life.

When your civil war was going on in the south of your country, and southerners were being kidnapped and sold into slavery, who do you think were a major group that worked to publicize this and stop it? My Jewish community.
So please do not be surprised at our involvement. It is about values and respect for life. NO suicide bombers here, respect for life, respect for others.

Congressman Lantos , one of the congressman arrested in DC is himself a survivor of the Nazi genocide. SO he knows, yes he knows all about racist genocide and the world doing nothing!

Dare I ask where other communities that should be involved, where are they??

Although I have heard it categorized as Arab (government and Janjaweed) against non-Arab, really I think they both have the same dark skin tone and that is a distinction that most Sudanese do not make. Drima would know better.
You can say, the Janjaweed are Muslim and the villagers are mostly Christian but I do not think the violence has been isolated against Christians.
But I do know, drima is an intelligent 19 year old college student and very sincere in his beliefs. He is probably surprised and touched that members of the US Congress and the American Jewish community are concerned about what is happening in his country. Blogs open the lines of communication so we can all learn from each other.
drima, I would love to join the rally but I am up in New York and as you well know, finals start next week! I’ll be there in spirit.

    Dear anonymous,

    A few points:

First, there is really very little distinction in the skin tone between the perps and the victims in this case. Genetically, there is probably very little racial difference. They are probably both mostly sub-Saharan Africans with some infusion of Semitic ancestry. Linguistic and cultural differences between the two groups lend the Janjaweed the label “Arabs” while labelling the Darfurians “blacks.”

Second, I think Drima’s comments about Jews were aimed at those Muslims who tend to think that the Jews simply don’t care for what goes happens to Muslim populations. I don’t think they were intended to be, in any way, offensive to Jews. Quite the contrary.

Drima will have to comment, but that was my impression.

    Oh one other comment anonymous,

“When your civil war was going on in the south of your country, and southerners were being kidnapped and sold into slavery, who do you think were a major group that worked to publicize this and stop it? My Jewish community.”

It is true that Jews played a significant role in publicizing the civil war in Sudan in the United States. They deserve credit for that. Even more so, since it was an issue that was for a long time practically ignored my the mainstream media. I would point out though, that many evangelical Christian groups also publicized the issue. Especially, with the large Christian population in southern Sudan being an issue. It was not, as you seem to suggest, soley a Jewish effort. Again though, the Jewish community does deserve credit, no doubt.

I say that as an agnostic.

Sorry to my new Jewish readers if you were offended. I was being sarcastic.

    Thank you for clarifying Tommy.

T, thank you I appreciate your comments.

However guys there is a slight confusion and misunderstanding. This genocide isn’t really racist. I think the only reason the Janjaweed were labeled “Arab” is because they were backed up by Khartoum government officials who have Arab blood.

The Janjaweed are essentialy the same race as those being murdered. They are both situated in the Western part of Sudan. It’s not Arabs VS Africans. That’s a misconception.

Sudanese people of the north consider themselves to be Afro-Arabs. I think that’s just stupid since we in the north are not realy Afro or even Arab. Culturaly we do have a lot in common with the Arabs but racialy no not realy. There are some northerners who are as white as Celien Dion. They are very fair because they have more of the Arab/Greek/Armenian/Turkish blood. As for the “Afro” part then it’s not really Afro. It should be Nubian.

So a more accurate racial definition of northerns is that we are Nubain-something. That something could be Arab, Greek, Armenian, Turkish or even Roman depending on which part of the north a northerner is from. Sudan is a huge country. As for the western Sudanese they are sub-saharan Africans who have “Arab looking” features but little or no Arab blood. The southerners are African tribals such as Dinka, Neur etc and they have many problems amongst themselves. The south is all the way down and since Sudan is so huge it was too far for any Arab, Greek, Armenian, Turkish etc. to reach and therefor the southerners have sort of remained “pure”. Only the British were able to reach them and that’s why the majority of them are now Chrisitian.

Easterners are more or less like the northerners.

Therefore my dear readers, the Darfur genocide is not really racial after all. The perpetrators and the victims are racially the same. This freaking disaster is happening for political reasons. Those westerners were largely ignored. When they saw that the southerners got what they wanted ie. Money, Politics & Power, they got “inspired” and started an uprising against the government. That’s when the government armed other westerners in the same region who had their loyalty to the government.

You know the rest of the story
